My take on last night-Tennessee

1. I'm ecstatic Bama beat those turds. Very satisfying.
2. Grubb's offensive play calling was so so. Tennessee kept loading the box. I don't understand why we didn't pass more. Unless you're going to run with a two or three TE set, it's gonna be tough to run on 7-8 guys in the box on a consistent basis.
3. Offensive line played fairly well. Not great but most of the time Ty had time to throw the ball. Run blocking was so so but see above. Tough to go 5 on 7.
4. Ty played pretty well. Made some clutch throws and a few I'm sure he wishes he had back. The throw he tried to Cuevas in the red zone where he was flushed out of the pocket and instead of either running for the 1st or tossing to Germie, he tried an across his body toss to Cuevas was nearly intercepted. Probably the only time Ty made a boneheaded decision.
5. WRs played extremely well. Ryan Williams made crazy catches all over the place. Germie played a hell of a game. The play where it was supposed to be a pass but he ended running it for 17 yards was crazy. Cuevas made some great catches.
6. RBs didn't have a great game but part of that was a multi faceted problem that in part wasn't their fault. Why we kept trying to run it up the middle with the box stacked over and over is beyond me. Run blocking was erratic. Sometimes good. Sometimes not so good.
7. Daniel Hill looked really good in the 4th. He's a huge dude and last night was the first time I think I've seen him run with authority out there. To me, he's seemed to run kind of timidly in other games. Not last night. Dude ran hard and abused people out there. Hopefully, he will continue to run hard and like he's angry.
8. Defense played fairly well. Drove me crazy how we kept getting gashed on the run and giving up big runs by just so so RBs. We are a TERRIBLE open field tackling team. Still, the defense came up with the stops when we had to and got the job done.
9. Brown's INT on the last play of the half was HUGE. Great anticipation and a bit of back breaker for the Vols.
10. I thought Red Morgan and Dijon Lee looked good. Lee is budding star. With more experience, the dude is going to be a monster out there.
11. Sean McDonough SUCKS. He acts like his mother married a guy from Alabama and the man physically abused him as a child. I know he doesn't work for the Crimson Tide Sports Network but Jesus, he NEVER has a positive thing to say about Alabama. Anytime Bama made a great play, it was always due to Bama getting away with committing a penalty, or pure luck or the Tennessee player fell down, etc. It just gets old.
12. Amazing crowd last night. Loved seeing all the smoke in the stands late in the 4th. I'm hoping the recruits were impressed, especially the defensive line recruits.

I said after the Missouri game and I still believe that the offenses inability to put teams away in the second half is going to bite us if it doesn't get fixed. Go score to open the second half last night and it probably turns into a blowout. I know we won by 17 but take away the pick 6 and safety and it's another nerve wracking one score game. You have to score more than 28 against the worst defense in the league. LSU, Auburn, and Oklahoma all have much better defenses than Tennessee.

I blame RYAN GRUBB!
He wasn't AGGRESSIVE in the second half.

McDonough actually stood up for Bama on the pass that the ESPN rules official said was a drop by Ryan Williams.
I never saw it hit the ground, and I'm glad that McDonough didn't go along with their retired official.
He also pointed out obvious holding by Tennessee when they had the ball close to our goal line.
Overall, I didn't notice any significant bias one way or the other.

Feel like GMac tries too hard to not seem bias and can almost come across as the rare alumnus hater.

Alabama put Vandy and Tennessee away in the 2nd half.
You are saying you want Alabama to blow them out. There is a difference between putting a team away and blowing them out.

Agree. I've never seen an alum try so hard to not sound like an alum. I dont remember when it was during last night's game, but he reminded me of tim brando on one of the calls...kinda pissed me off.

And this is exactly where it will happen too:

I have major issues with how they start 2nd half and this is strictly on Grubb. He tend to play conservative in 3rd quarters this season. go back and look at the stats for all the game. We barely do anything in 3rd. This is major issue.

It's like he is calling his 5 yr. old grandson and asking him to choose the play to call for him. A couple of those drives were inexplicable

He's always been a cuck but after he stood there and advocated for both Clemson and SMU to get into the playoffs last year following the game, he can frick himself eternally. You don't have to be Booger or Ingram but damn, you don't have to constantly go out of your way to prove you aren't biased either (see Reese Davis).

It goes back to Grubb forcing the run when he doesn’t have to.
First possession of the second half
Run- stuffed
Run-stuffed
Pass to the boundary, had no chance
Punt
When your opponent is slightly panicked go empty set and pass on them. That’s our best lineup. Then as everyone saw in the 4th, the run opens up. This isn’t rocket science.

I think it is interesting how I doubt Alabama fans will ever really like this defensive scheme. It has some real limitations. However, it is the exact medicine for the Vols veer n shoot scheme. Keep the plays in front of you. Make them throw underneath and rally to the tackle. Make them be stubborn with the run. Make them execute long drives. Do not stick in man coverage so much that it is a matter of time because one corner gets cooked and you've given them a 1 play, 87 yard TD drive.
Also, I think we're seeing the limits of how far the zone run game can take you. When teams won't give you favorable front, it is hard to create creases. I believe DeBoer is going to need more and/or better gap scheme plays in the running attack to be better against teams who put a lot of defenders near the LOS in standard downs or short-yardage runs. When you don't have the numbers at the LOS, zone schemes often fall apart. That's when you need to be calling runs that try to attack a specific gap.

I wasn't sober last night so I'll have to watch a replay, but I do wonder how many times Ty is checking into those runs because we have numbers for an easy 5+ yards and our RBs just don't see the holes. Danny Hilldozer is our only real downhill runner. Jam and Riley don't hit the hole. They shuffle and try to ride blocks.

I believe at least 1 was a loaded box.

I think some of these runs against stack boxes were “we think you’re bluffing and we are going to crease you” but they weren’t bluffing.

I mean in general, not just that one possession. I felt like on a handful of runs where we gained frick all there was a hole that was missed.

13. It has been a joy to watch so much Alabama football and not hear Gary Danielson

I cannot remember a Bama defense being so bad in open field tackling - almost pedestrian.
They seem to be more effective close & tight and when the field shrinks. Not like they can do much to address it now - excepts keeping these chunk plays from developing.
Overall, they played well, holding UTk under their avg.
