My father knew Johnny and my uncle played HS ball with him. I had the privilege of speaking to Johnny on the phone. Such a humble, gracious, God fearing man who was raised right. I told Johnny that I was a lifelong MSU fan but always followed his coaching career and wished him success. Johnny thanked me and told me he enjoyed his time as an MSU assistant coach.
His book, You Can Go Home Again, is a great read. Some football talk but great life lessons and stories of growing up in Lynchburg.
I’ve got stories about Fulmer but I will keep it classy and hold my breath.

Majors was a better player
Fulmer was a better coach

All time Tennessee figure the edge goes to Majors.

Majors is one the best program builders of all time but Fulmer had a higher ceiling.

No he didn’t, Johnny won a natty, just not in Knoxville. He had us knocking on the door in 89. John Majors had already done all the heavy lifting when Fulmer took the reins.

I mean, Fulmer’s coaching career is done. We know exactly what his ceiling was. See OP.

Majors was never going to win a natty at Tennessee. 2 out of his 3 SEC titles were really Florida's, but Florida was on probation, so we won it. Fulmer also had to compete in the division era which is much harder to win the conference in. Anyone who thinks Majors was going to win a natty at Tennessee is delusional. Also Majors most successful years came after Fulmer became the OC

Majors had sucess at 3 schools. Winning a title at Pitt tops anything Fulmer has done. Nobody would touch Fulmer after Tennessee fired him the first time because he is so dirty. It helped Fulmer he faced DuBose and Shula while Tennessee. Florida owned him.

Face it...

A lot of this is due to one of them being a running back and the other being a chubby anonymous offensive lineman.

Tennessee went 11-1 in 1989. Just looked it up. Forgot that the Vols were close to a NC that year.

People like to bitch about Peyton and Woodson

John Majors was the Tennessee Heisman finalist that really got screwed. They gave the award to a player on a losing team!

Majors was such an amazing guy. I spent some time with him a few months before he passed. Needless to say, the grudge with Fulmer was still there.

Also, Fulmer struggled without Cutcliffe running his offense.

Johnny Majors was an old school coach, who is undervalued. If it wasn't for his battle with alcohol, there's no telling what he might have done as a coach. I met the man and loved what he was able to do at Tennessee after the spiral from the end of Bill Battle's time at the helm. BTW...Bill Battle is another coach I met and I liked. He wasn't a great coach, but he was a great man.

Fulmer did a very good job at building up Tennessee in an era where the SEC became much more difficult than it was during Majors time as HC.

Majors was HC at UT from 1977 through 1992 (16 seasons). During that time, the College Football National Championship was won by SEC schools 4 times ('78 Bama, '79 Bama, '80 Georgia and '92 Alabama).

Fulmer was HC at UT from 1993 through 2008 (16 seasons). During that time, the College Football National Championship was won by SEC schools 6 times ('96 Florida, '98 Tennessee, '03 LSU, '06 Florida, '07 LSU, '08 Florida). Note that with USC's forfeit in '04, and Auburn finishing 13-0, some might argue that there were 7 National Champion SEC teams during that 16 year stretch.

Fulmer got complacent at the end of his era, and leaned heavily on having better talent and better coordinators than most of the teams he faced. Johnny rarely had the type of talent that Fulmer had, and did amazing things to get the most out of his players.
