Did he quit or was he kicked off the team? I’ve read both, and I’m not current on the situation

Not sure if he was a Captain

BATON ROUGE, La. -- Free safety Damien James, touted by LSU as a cornerstone of a defense dubbed the "James Gang,'' has apparently quit the team.

Coach Nick Saban said Wednesday he assumes free safety Damien James has quit the team, but he hasn't heard anything from James all week.

James, a senior starter, missed practice for the third straight day. Saban said sophomore cornerback Randall Gay will be the starter at free safety Saturday at Auburn.

James, who missed his only start this year Sept. 1 at Virginia Tech for disciplinary reasons, was one of the defensive stars last season in LSU's 31-20 win over Tennessee in the Southeastern Conference Championship Game.

Saban said he hasn't spoken with James since LSU's 38-14 victory Saturday over South Carolina.

"I did not suspend him,'' he said. "I did not have words with him. Nothing.''

James could not be reached for comment.

"We're going to support the guy every way we can, help the guy every way we can, but obviously he's missed now three days of practice, and I haven't talked to him, so I'm assuming that he's quit the team,'' Saban said. "That's just an assumption on my part, since I haven't talked to him.

Yep, on one of my high school baseball teams. Many times captains are named before the regular season. Once the regular season starts a captain may find themselves not performing like they thought they would. Their playing time gets reduced then cut out and they lose their spot in the starting lineup. Some players can handle it, some can't. It happens.

Didn't he lose his starting job after he was injured and Freeze stabbed him in the back? From what I heard the players are supporting him and not the coach.

The players know they'll be playing for an interim coach after this weekend

The rumour is he asked to redshirt and Freeze turned him down. His response was F-U too.

IMO, It's just proof Hugh has lost the Locker room. At least Alston had the balls to tell him to his face he's cooked.

Miles Brennan kind of quit because of injuries. It wasnt mid season but it was late August.

When there is unlimited free agency players have zero right to complain about fairness. It's a good business decision. Worry about rebuilding the roster after the season.

From Grok:

quote:

Yes, there have been a few notable cases in college football where team captains have quit or opted out mid-season, often citing reasons like preparing for the NFL Draft, injuries, or dissatisfaction. Here's a rundown of some examples:In December 2020, Texas Longhorns offensive tackle Samuel Cosmi and safety Caden Sterns—both team captains—quit the team after a loss to Iowa State, opting out of the remaining games to focus on the NFL Draft.

This came amid a broader trend of players preserving eligibility or health late in the season.

I don't know what this guy's reason is but it doesn't seem like Myles has a selfish motive for leaving the team. If you can't medically get out there, then you can't get out there. He probably didn't want to take the spot of someone who could physically be on the field.

No I think that would have been in 02 when that happened. I know for a fact Damien James recovered a big fumble in the 01 SECCG.

The guy gave Auburn 4 yrs. He knows Hugh hates the run game and he's been there through 4 straight losing seasons, the kid sees the writing on the wall and wants to salvage his last year of eligibility and give it a shot elsewhere.
