Speaking of SMU & “NIL” in another thread: it’s ridiculous how the ncaa nearly ruined SMU

Can Alabama have 21 wins back over textbooks?

This is called presentism. Applying the standards of today to history without context.
SMU got fricked because they got caught cheating. And then instead of fixing the problem, they got caught cheating again doing the same thing, and lied about it. And we aren't talking about boosters doing shite here, it was official people at SMU doing it.
If the NCAA was wrong it wasn't because they punished SMU, it was because of selective enforcement/punishment amounts in other places.
SMU got what it deserved.

Caused my little brother to quit LSU when they flipped his scholarship to a SMU guy in the feeding frenzy. He would have started next year as deep snapper if he had come back

Op, that was longhorn back stabbing to take down a competitor. SMU wasn't doing anything that everybody else wasn't doing.
They did the same thing to Jackie Sherrill at TAMU because he was beating their arse every year. They could never pull that off now because Aggie power in the state has expanded significantly.

That and they used to burn or drown women who were condemned as witches but we evolve.
In a way, what happened to SMU led to NIL today. The NCAA no longer has the power to do it again but more than that has shown no willingness to even consider enacting a punishment of that magnitude.
SMU paid the price so we can all ride.

correct answer. i played there in the 70’s. swc was the wild west. austin was in control of the ncaa at the time. the boosters were most definitely in charge. one of the naughty nine is a good friend of mine. pony excess is a poor production and a lot a made up stuff for tv. school officials did not tell the truth. governor threw the boosters under the bus.

Ethics is what we want everyone else to have.
I think of the way Nebraska operated under a different set of rules for years to maintain a competitive advantage over its Big 8 rivals. The minute the rules changed, their dominance ended.
