I don't like first game match ups like Texas / Ohio State and LSU / Clemson as it tells us nothing about the teams. First games mean nothing as to how bad or good a team will be and it starts one team out as 0-1. I do think that three of these four teams will make the playoffs though. Just my two cents worth.

It worked great for Texas last year. Michigan was severely overrated, but that W really helped set the stage for the season.

Could be the same this season.

I think it is bettrer to do it week 2...most teams need a warm up game. Especially if you have a vastly different depth chart from the season before.

Yeah not sure I agree with that.

Yes a lot can change between now and December but it’s a game on the schedule nonetheless…. The outcome of a game of equals tells us a lot more than a 55-0 win versus CupcakeU.

It’s all the cupcake games that tell us nothing.

"Power" conference teams should only play such matchups.

UT fans saying a game against a highly ranked opponent says nothing.

Is UT a trans-SEC team?

Not being able to get up and get organized for the first game actually tells me a whole lot about a team.

It's good to see big games early in the season, but agree we won't see the same product on the field week 1 vs mid/late season.

It’s all about the ratings. Start the season off with a bang. The playoffs will not penalize a loss here unless the losses start piling up

It wouldn’t have been wise in the BCS era but now that a team w 2-3 losses can make the playoffs it’s less of a concern.

Like someone else posted beating a UTEP or Sam Houston St 63-0 doesn’t tell you anything either.

This, it’s true that both of these teams will look very different at the end of the season. A win only helps that strength of schedule which becomes really important at the end of the season not to mention the momentum gained from a win.

Had you typed, "the biggest improvement realized is always from Week 1 to Week 2," I would have agreed.

But you can tell a lot about a team in Week 1 vs good competition.

Vs bad competition ... notsomuch.
