Florida/Auburn fans, how big was the rivalry when it was played every year?

It was probably the biggest casualty of the 2003 schedule change when the SEC went to only 1 permanent E/W opponent.

Through the 80's-90's it was pretty big.
Honestly, I would rather that be our 3rd permanent game instead of LSU, which came along later after the UF and UT annual meetings went away.

Obviously, UA and UGA will be the first two.

I really wish we could play them all every year.

It was bigish… but the division split in 92 changed the dynamic.

It was typically on the 3rd Saturday in October… same as bama UT. Made for a great sec weekend

Some of my favorite memories were from the FL/Auburn series.

Auburn is the closet SEC campus to Gainesville. It was big in the 80' and 90's.

In the 80's the Florida game was the first leg of Pat Dye's "Amen Corner." Some very memorable moments. Auburn played UF, UGA and Bama. in order at the end of their SEC season.

It still pisses me off we lost that series. There have been some incredible nail biting last second W's in the series. Hopefully that will be our third permanent.

Some epic games:

1982: Florida 19, #19 Auburn 17
1983: #4 Auburn 28, #5 Florida 21
1984: #13 Florida 24, #11 Auburn 3
1985: #2 Florida 14, #6 Auburn 10
1986: Florida 18, #5 Florida 17
1987: #6 Auburn 29, #10 Florida 6
1988: #9 Auburn 16, Florida 0
1989: #12 Auburn 10, #19 Florida 7
1990: #15 Florida 48, #4 Auburn 7
1991: #6 Florida 31, Auburn 10
1992: #23 Florida 24, Auburn 9
1993: #19 Auburn 38, #4 Florida 35
1994: #6 Auburn, #1 Florida 33
1995: #3 Florida 49, #7 Auburn 38
1996: #1 Florida 51, #16 Auburn 10
1997: #7 Florida 24, #6 Auburn 10
1998: #5 Florida 24, Auburn 3
1999: #7 Florida 32, Auburn 14
2000: #10 Florida 38, #19 Florida 7
2000: #7 Florida 28, #18 Auburn 6 (SEC CG)
2001: Auburn 23, #1 Florida 20
2002: Florida 30, Auburn 23

I would venture to say that for the entirety of those 21 seasons, there was no better annually played rivalry in the SEC. Ten SEC titles were won in those 21 seasons by one of the two teams (6 for Florida, 4 for Auburn).

As a student in the late 60’s it produced some great games, like the 9 times we intercepted UF in 1969 or the year Steve Spurrier kicked the FG to bet us in Gainesville. The games in the 80’s and 90’s were epic. I even recall Ray Graves UF post game shows from the late 50’s and early 60’s. Gosh, I haven’t mentioned the ‘93 game at JHS.

It was always a really big game for us. It was like LSU is now.

Yep those Auburn games could get pretty wild. A lot of upsets.

Very much so. I’d go so far as to say that for a period, most Auburn fans considered Florida our third rival behind only Bama and Georgia.

Yes it was. I was there. As I recall, it had just started a light rain moments before Damon Duval kicked the winning field goal. I remember looking over at the American flag and it was blowing right toward the line of scrimmage. I thought with that wind there was no way he’d make the kick. But he did and Jordan-Hare absolutely erupted. It was so loud you couldn’t hear yourself yelling.

I was in the stadium for several of them. The one I remember most is when Reggie Slack hit Shane Wasden on a 4th and 12 play in the back of the endzone and the stadium absolutely exploded. Halloween night if memory serves. Could be conflating things but it was a huge game and a huge play at a clutch time. Dye’s teams were nails late in games. I miss that.

I was in Auburn's band when we beat UF in 06 and 07 (blocked punt/Tre Smith scoop and then Byrum making the kick twice).

Still remember Byrum (who I think was from Florida if I recall?) running down the field doing the gator chomp after making the game winning FG.

I played vs Auburn in the 80s. Auburn was good in just about every sport. Incredible rivalry that was sad to see go.

But it’s also a reason the Gators have never had a perfect season. We play too many teams that have a high level commitment to football. It’s always been a murderers row for UF. Auburn had some incredible teams through the years.
