Auburn has had four consecutive losing seasons in football. Bama lost to Vanderbilt for the first time in 40+ years.
The Alabama schools wake up in the morning thinking about basketball success and determining whose loss in the NCAA tournament was more impressive.
There is a women's basketball success thread, started by an Auburn fan, on the first page of the Rant.
Despite the arse-whoopings, I miss the man. Turns out, he was holding it all together.

Nick won on stockpiling NFL talent, not pure chess-moves coaching. When he couldn't have a team of 5 stars, he wasn't going to be as successful. Saban was a great recruiter and organizer but he would have never been successful with less talent.

We saw what he did in the NFL without a substantial talent advantage over his opponents. Bust in two seasons and ran back to the college game.

You're not saying anything Saban didn't say himself. According to Saban, when he met with Mal Moore and discussed the job, Saban said he told Moore, "I'm an average football coach, but one helluva recruiter". Saban went on to tell Moore that "players matter," and he couldn't take average football players and make them great. But he could take very good football players and make them great.
Teams don't win championships with average players. Most championship teams have elite talent somewhere on their roster and the players below them are very good as well. That isn't just a Saban thing, that's a fundamental necessity thing to winning championships.

Saban won by developing talent into elite players.
There was no drop off in talent at Alabama and it had nothing to do with why Saban retired. He retired because the players no longer had the desire to be elite, they just wanted to get paid now.

First, Jamarcus Russell was a fricking horrible bust. He was clouded as one of the greatest and he was terrible. Secondly, nobody wins at the Dolphins. Hell Marino never won a title and never went back after year one. Even the dolphins underperform now with loads of unbelievable talent. Lastly, he won 9 games which isn’t great, but according to Dolphins standards it’s the 3rd best season in 30 years.
Lastly, I was listening to Nick talk years ago after he left and why he did it. He mentioned about how NFL players are hard to coach because they make more money than you do. You can’t tell them to attend practice, you can’t make them run laps. They do what they want and when they want, and there is nothing a coach can do about it.

Nick Saban is a phenomenal stockpiler of talent...when he's the only one allowed to do it.
With equal or lesser talent, he's proven to be a mediocre coach on his very best day.
Greatest thing to ever happen to Nick was Emmert getting the Indy gig.
