What is the biggest reason Texas A&M is a steppingstone program?

Is it their inherent loser nature? Lack of fan support? Less money available post-Jimbo? Weird culture?

It just seems odd that an SEC school gets its good head coaches pilfered by other programs.

The problem is that beating LSU in a yearly basis is no longer considered a positive.

It’s like beating up a cripple. Once you’ve done it a few times, you have to move on.

I know this is a troll post

But I do think we should talk about the fact that A&M is one of the biggest, richest schools in the country in one of the biggest, richest states and yet I think the average person finds it to be an incredibly boring brand from an athletic/marketing perspective

A&M alums say they don't care and I get their perspective, but surely there are times when being regularly overlooked/forgotten about is annoying given their inherent advantages.

And of course, they share the state with a top 3 college athletics brand

The brand is controlled by a bunch of rich retired probably military background 80 and 90 year olds. Sorry we aren’t hip enough for you.

They won’t let our coaches twerk like LSU let’s BK.

My read here is this could be a soft landing for Buzz. Maybe he wasn’t receiving the assurances/resources he wanted?

A&M hired Trev Alberts as AD to cut costs but he’s seemingly caused a lot of rift within the athletic department. It was stated that he and buzz hadn’t chatted in months.

It’s very reminiscent of when Texas hired Steve Patterson as AD.

No idea. They are a sleeping giant. I keep thinking that, eventually, they are going to find an AD that puts it all together for them. AD is the problem. A bad one sinks athletics but good ones put it all together. Just look at the absolute shite our programs were prior to CDC coming on board. Even a good coach, if they don't feel like they are 100% supported by the AD, will fail.
if they ever get THAT hire right they can be a force. Trev is not that guy. I'm sure a lot of Ags will agree with me on that one.

I don’t think non basketball schools turn into basketball schools overnight, unless you’re Arkansas and Tyson chicken.

Agreed. Was talking all sports in general. I truly think you guys are the right Athletic Director away from finally realizing your potential. Easier said than done I know.
This coming from a school that hired steve fricking patterson.

Weird culture?

I personally think that this is the answer. They are willing to throw boatloads of money at every team, and yet coaches still leave. Has to be a strange environment.

A&M is a really good academic insitution with a peculiar culture in a terrible town with no track record of championships in a major revenue sport in any of our lifetimes. They can't be anything other than a "steppingstone program."

I will play

I don’t think your take is far off but it’s a chicken or the egg scenario. Winning is what really makes you hip and we’ve never done it. I’d actually say we receive way more attention (in the form of ink, nationally televised games, media attention) than we deserve based on historical accomplishments. Of course some of that is due to tripping on our own dicks in spectacular fashion quite often

But I don’t think you’re ever making this brand hip without winning, unless another coke addled magician QB rolls through. Even without being hip, we still pull in top talent in football and baseball. Perhaps that talent underperforms because of the culture? I don’t know, there isn’t an easy answer.

I don't agree. The same has been said by plenty of programs that turned it around. They hire the right AD and things change quickly. Just wonder how long they are going to tolerate Trev before they go another direction.
As for the "boring brand" take. Everyone seems boring that isn't winning. I'm sure the same was said about Oregon for a long time.

I'm pretty sure those WW2 vets didn't bedazzle overalls and prance around on the sidelines but I digress

Anyway, as I said, I can see the merit in keeping the brand subtle and even boring from an alum perspective, but there are downsides to that as well that may come into play when it comes to things like not having your coaches leave for tiny, dying schools in the mid-Atlantic

As this is a real response -

Yeah I get that. I think A&M would be pretty well served by a HC of the football program that draws some attention and has a brand himself (probably more Kiff than Deion). Whereas Elko is a perfectly fine, suitable coach for A&M that seems very unlikely to make any move in this regard.

But I do genuinely understand A&M's culture isn't necessarily of the sort that needs attention and branding, but I'm not sure that's something in the coming era that a big program can afford to intentionally pass on.

I am with you. The baseball collapse alone should be a fireable offense for Alberts.
