LSU/A&M Series - I have questions

I find the matchup compelling. It's been an entertaining TV game as of late. Most casual fans wouldn't guess that this thing goes back to the 1800's with 60 games having been played between the two.
The main thing I want to know is why is there such a discrepancy in location played at? I was diving into the history and it seems like a good 60%+ of the games have been in Baton Rouge.
Was this a "payday" game for A&M back in the day?

This actually happened frequently many years back. State & Ole Miss played more games in Baton Rouge because the stadium was larger and Oxford & Starkville did not have the access, hotels and other amenities that was really needed to host conference games. It was possibly the same with A&M.
Later State & Ole Miss played those games in Jackson. But since 1990, State has played all home games on campus and I think Ole Miss did the same starting in 1995.

We tell TAMU to jump and they say how high.
Just like we decide when we want to play them and when we don’t.
Notice how we stopped playing in the mid 90s
If you really want to get under their skin bring that up.
We needed a more prestigious opponent and we found them a replacement that was suitable for their stature.

Same reason why Alabama only plays Southern Miss in Tuscaloosa and not Hattiesburg.
small time football program with little history of success looking for a payday.

Crazy right, we richer than you, still took your money, and walked into Death Valley. You guys stopped coming to Kyle after you just started bc you couldn’t win there. Same shite today.

quote:Every game was a "payday" game for the visitors, back before the 80s, because teams split the gate revenue 50/50. Bear Bryant also had A&M sign a contract with Rice to play every game in that series at Houston (they had 70,000 seats, and at least half the crowd would be Aggies).

Go back and look at where teams played, and you'll see schools with small stadiums either playing on the road or playing their home games away from campus. Auburn didn't play UT in Auburn until 1980 because UT wouldn't come to Auburn for a puny paycheck, but would travel to Birmingham. The Mississippi schools didn't play games in Jackson solely out of self interest, either. Back before the conference started doing scheduling, SEC schools were free to make their only schedule, they just had to play a minimum number of games to be eligible for the championship. Schools with larger stadiums and strong ticket bases got to play at home a lot more often.

Yes. After losing 5 straight, LSU paid A&M to get out of that annual L.

Nobody is scared of you, Aggie

It was ALL about SEC expansion and more home games.
The fact that the SEC later added you is the bigger “wtf moment”.
Weird Cults shouldn’t be in the SEC (oh & yankee Missouri too)

Five straight losses to A&M from '91 to '95 would make anyone want to wuss out and quit play us. Most of those were real beatdowns too.

30 years later and Aggies are still melting.
Remember when yall did the same thing to Texas?

Davis Wade didn't have lights up until the mid to late 80's. I can remember LSU always having to play them in the day in Starkville. Crazy when you think about it.

Bitch please. You need to win 5 consecutive games vs LSU….. JUST TO BE .500 against them since joining the SEC.

You just said your record all time is built on nothing but home games. That would make it inflated.

LSU played ole miss in Jackson several times as well
Once sec expanded in 1992 lsu couldn’t play a home and home with Aggies and give up a home game every other year
It’s also the reason Tulane series ended
On top of that sec added the championship game

On top of what others said about ticket revenue
LSU and Tulane for a long time were In a Bidding war to build the largest stadium In the Country. Well before the Big House was what it is.

In it's early history A&M was a small school and often played on the road. NBD.
