It’s an interesting concept, but it would probably work better for the SEC or B1G

So who gets the auto bid? The ACC is trash and many/most years wouldn’t deserve two teams in the playoff. Would be wildly satisfying if they did this and their regular season champion was left out due to a provision that their championship game winner went.

Can they truly call that a championship game then?
Rhetorical question...

Not bad....when you think about the ACC and how the teams are picked to play in the 12 team playoff.
==================================
The SEC---
UGA lost their starting QB....werre gonna get in reguardless. uTX took another loss that maybe doesn't happen if they play a team below UGA.
Interesting.

So a conference championship game without the best team in the conference? That’s dumb

quote:There has been rumor that the SEC is considering a regular season champion having the automatic bid and then have teams that finished 2nd and 5th/3rd and 4th do a playoff and the winners advance to the playoff provided we and the B1G get 3 guaranteed spots. That would result in 2 more SEC games and ESPN would love the extra games. That would be an easy sell if it fell into place.

Until the playoffs fix this trend, you're going to see dumber and dumber crap like this.
The playoffs have already done everything they can to make the conference title worthless.

Not one conference champion or team with a bye made the final four teams. Not one of the top 4 seeded teams made the final 4. Tonight the #8 seed will play the 7th seed.
Proving once again that CCGs are tits on a bull. The tradition continues.

Too little too late but that is the kinda forward thinking you want from a conference, do it or don’t it should be talked about. Hell it’s been suggested a bunch here. Impractical idea though. This year the acc had two teams. If Clemson plays Miami for title this year neither get in only Smu.

They served a purpose in the bcs era, not so much in a 16 team or whatever it’ll be playoff.

When BEST is lost, you get LESS. Sankey and the other commishs made sure of it this time.

Conference titles used to be a matter of pride - you had more control over winning your conference than you did winning the national title.
Even in the 4-team playoff it was still something, as not every conference champ was assured of getting in.
Gone now are conference title games with massive post-season implications. The 2012 SECCG was the peak of the SEC title game; it will never be as impactful as it was that season.

That's a dumb rumor. If they SEC is going to force its teams to play more games just to get a spot, the other conferences should as well.

They are free to do that just as much as the CFP can then require their auto bid for the bye must be from championship games between two teams that are either 1 & 2 or between division winners. Pretty stupid to think the CFP won't adjust.

I've been wondering how long it would take for somebody to game the system.

Ridiculous. If it isn't 1 vs 2, just eliminate it. No one would watch or care anyway.

This is so dumb.
Just do selections exactly like they do the NCAA basketball tournament selections.
No rankings until the day after the conference championship games.
The conference basketball tournaments affect seeding.
If UGA/UTx didn't know their exact position in the rankings prior to the game, the championship game matters a ton.
What they did this past year was asinine.
16 teams, no byes. No rankings until all games are played. Two week break following conference championship games and then weekly games until the final which can have another off week before playing that.
They also need to move the Army-Navy game to rivalry weekend.
