So, now they’re going to have to pay female athletes just like male athletes. This should get interesting…

quote:

The plans that many major college athletic departments are making for how they will distribute new direct payments to their athletes would violate Title IX law, according to a memo published by the Department of Education on Thursday. The memo provides some long-awaited guidance about how gender equity laws will apply to a new era of college sports that is on track to begin this summer. It's not clear if the U.S. Department of Education will interpret Title IX law the same way when incoming President Donald Trump's administration installs new officials in the near future. The NCAA and its power conferences have agreed to allow each school to share up to $20.5 million in direct payments to their athletes via name, image and likeness deals as one of the terms of a pending antitrust settlement

quote:

Many schools from those power conferences have developed plans to distribute the majority of that money to athletes in sports that generate the most revenue -- mostly football and men's basketball players.

quote:

In some cases, athletic directors have publicly shared that they intend to provide upwards of 75% of that money to their football players. However, the Office For Civil Rights -- the division of the Department of Education that enforces Title IX law -- said in its memo Thursday that those future payments should be considered "athletic financial assistance" and therefore must be shared proportionally between men and women athletes.

ESPN

What’s this going to mean as far as paying millions for the 5* QB?

More than that, the memo states that there must be equal publicity because any disparity in publicity could result in less access to NIL payments.

It’s a shite show.

This should be cleared up first of next week.

Can't apply to NIL deals since they aren't handled by the schools.

Would apply to revenue sharing. Most likely, it will be the end of many sports.

The department of education doesn't have the authority to make or interpret laws, not sure why their opinion matters here.

For every 5m QB a random field hockey player will also get 5m

Title IX can’t do anything about private NIL payments. Those are contracts between businesses and the players. They may have a case regarding revenue sharing, though. Because that would be the school itself directing payments to athletes.

QB has to identify as female for reporting purposes. Doesn’t have to act like it.

Ooooo this is going to be interesting if this sticks because of schools promising NIL off of the assumptions that they would have the revenue share in July.

Some of us told you what is coming. The federal lawsuit in Oregon is going to kill collegiate athletics.

I hope Trump abolishes the DoE. What do they actually DO? Americans were much better educated on average before the DoE was even a thing.

Wait until you learn how federal funding works.

Do you know why Louisiana raised the legal drinking age from 18 to 21 in 1995?

They didn’t want to.

But if they didn’t the federal government was going to cut off all highway funding to the state of Louisiana.

Department of education funding is huge. And the courts have already ruled on title IX.
