I will admit, I didn't see this one coming.

Imagine being an edge rusher leaving a place that’s about to have two edge players drafted in the first round.

Would have gone to OSU but our players have buyouts with their NIL deals. His buyout alone was $400,000 plus whatever his nil deal with Mizzou is. OSU didn’t want to pay that much. As far as the player, he’s got a lot of talent but didn’t want to play in our scheme anymore. We all know Kirby prioritizes rush lane integrity and not rushing the qb recklessly to avoid big scrambles etc. He wants to just rush the passer like your traditional 4-3 DE/ stand up edge. Doesn’t want all the structure we use.

One program trending up, the other trending down.

NIL contracts have no buyouts. Mizzou just took what they wanted off your roster and y'all couldn't afford it.

Never heard of NIL deals having buyouts. I would think that would require a signed salary agreement. Regardless this is a hell of a pickup for Mizzou

The rumor was that Wilson had a 400,000 dollar buyout.

Who the hell is Missouri's swinging deck NIL booster?

That’s the whole thing about NIL, we’ve got a ton of boosters with deep pockets( one gave 12m). There was a ranking a bit ago that had Mizzou a T10 NIL school

“Couldn’t afford it”…..possibly

“Chose not to afford it”….more likely

It had more to do with scheme fit than you think. Did we want him back? Absolutely. But not at a king’s ransom.

Also on the topic of Georgia’s supposed NIL budget…the only players we outright have been outbid for have been Justus Terry and Caleb Downs and Downs still likely would have ended up coming here if his dad wasn’t still butthurt that we never offered his brother a couple years ago. Either way OSU offered him more but not by much. Point is Kirby will absolutely play NIL bidding war if he thinks you’re good enough. Obviously our pockets aren’t endless but there seems to be this naive portion of fans (many Georgia fans as well) that think we have all these good players solely on the back of future NFL contract dreams and good vibes. Sure we sell that but we pay too. We just don’t advertise it because we don’t want players seeing us as a big spender.

People also generally underestimate how much is spent on player retention at schools who recruit top HS classes. For every Damon Wilson that leaves, there are 3 or 4 more 5*s that stay. That retention isn’t as flashy as buying a transfer but still probably costs a lot of money.

NIL was always going to be kind to Mizzou. Lot of deep-pocketed alums and what else are you going to spend it on in Missouri.

Yes. NIL was the best thing that could happen for Mizzou. We’ve always had the money to compete at a high level, but our administration has always been too afraid to get dirty and buy players like the big boys.

Now that it’s legal for them to do it…whole new era.

My guess is there are several former Rams fans in and around STL that have gradually gravitated towards the idea that Mizzou is their pro football team now (and they know the university isn't moving to Arizona or California) and so they are starting to support the program more financially then they might have in the past.
Not saying KC peeps aren't supporting, but there's a shitload of $$$ in the western part of the state going towards the Chiefs (understandable) whereas the former Rams/Cardinals fans have some extra jack to throw around for NIL. Just my theory.

No it’s not. Not all of them do but the one he signed in December did.

The bucknut copium in this thread is magically stupid. LOL The combination of Wilson saying no to them, and the memory of our "mid" program beating their arse on the football field just a year ago is too much for them to handle.
