Did anyone else find Byrne’s comments yesterday off-putting?

Is Alabama’s NIL really in that bad of a place that he feels he has to come out and beg fans for money? I watch every football, basketball, and most baseball games and root like hell for the Tide. But I haven’t given a dime to Yea Alabama nor will I. It all just rings hollow when the common fan can’t even afford the concession stand at these game anymore.

He’s swung and missed a couple of times lately. Yesterday, nor the whining about OOC scheduling the day of the playoff reveal were good looks. Not saying he was WRONG on either, but his presentation and timing on those two things both looked bad.

Is there any time it’s a good look to ask for NIL?

I just think he and all other ADs are in an impossible situation here. All the recent changes to college athletics make them a net negative for all universities, but the AD can’t come out and say that.

My thought process is that I cant bitch and moan about us losing players to the portal if I don't donate to Yea Alabama. I know that my monthly donation probably doesnt do a whole lot, but it still makes me feel like I'm doing my part. Alabama athletics has helped me to experience a lot of great memories with my family with the games we have traveled to across the country. So it's definitely worth donating some money every month to try to keep the best players we possibly can in my opinion.

Byrne wants an Alumnus, like myself, to be loyal and financially support the University. However, that NIL money will go to players who have no loyalty to my university… don’t think so Greg… this fake Outback Bowl may be my swan song to CFB.

Edit: I did contribute very early on to Yea Alabama, but canceled when Saban left… and I also gave to the Alumni Association for years… but no more.

Sure, send your alumni base letters, emails, phone calls.

Don't whine on a stage where it's going to be picked up by national media, especially on the day when a current player seems to be extorting the program.

I find it hard to believe Bama is struggling for NIL money. Even if it is, there are much more worthy causes in need of my money. Sports aren't important.

Does players have to pay state income tax on their NIL?

Byrnes would be better off asking Gov Meemaw to get rid of State Income. Everyone would be behind him.

It is what it is these days. Got to have NIL money to get and keep the best players. Don't have either and the wins will dry up.

It was sent by email. He just put it on Twitter too.

To me, this was the perfect time to ask for money. The normal fan spends a lot of time online so they were aware what just happened with Mbakwe. This seems like the most opportune time to hit the feels of both big donors as well as us regular joes who might be on the fence for donating.

That was his mistake in my opinion in terms of the visual.

But heck, maybe we pulled in a few million dollars that day, and in that case, good on him I suppose.

Remember what I said the other day about donors leaving. This is it. Big exodus from losing and not making playoffs. There will be season tickets open more than usual coming up.

In one of my earlier posts on this topic, I basically stated that throwing $$$ at this NIL stuff is just throwing good money after bad. Looks like I was ahead of the curve. College ball is on the verge of collapse for most schools. This really reminds me of the current state of free agency in MLB where only 2-3 teams are really competing for the top guys because they can simply out-spend everyone else.

I will repeat another statement I made previously.......it just ain't fun anymore.

I think every AD has done the same thing. Byrne just went public with it.

LSU is having Kelly match donors to drive theirs up.

FSU is taking money back from their coach to fund their NIL.

Would we rather have that model or reach out to the fans to support?

I dont think the Bama NIL is struggling, but its clear to me they arent just gonna throw money at players just to land them. Personally I think its smart since NIL has basically turned into players being free agents working on one year contracts.

That’s some shitty fans and donors if all it takes is 3 losses to close their pocketbooks. But if I get better seats next year because of it, good.
