Lets be real, we need to go back to 4 team playoffs (6 at most)

Like what are we doing? The lower teams don't even have a chance so why are we doing this? You think Indiana, or Boise St or Alabama are going to do anything but take up space??

Lets get real and lets cut the fat by half.

I agree. Four rounds is going to take forever.

I agree completely. 6 would be perfect, with Top 2 conference champions earning byes.

Unfortunately, hay is in the barn now and no sport would ever dare contract the size of the playoffs. Only expand, expand, expand!

I don't think Alabama has a great shot but the difference in Alabama's shot and Georgia or Texas' shot (assuming they are starting from outside the bye) is not exactly a huge difference.

Last year was the only time 6 made sense. We should do 4 and then a contingency for 6 in case there is another shitshow.

I like it. Contingency play-in games for the bubble spots at the higher ranked teams home field.

Wasted emotions.

It's NEVER gonna happen. We're never going back to 4 teams. We'll be going to 16 teams with no byes in a few years.

A 16 team playoff would be great.. the problem this year is with the extra byes.. if they just seeded all the teams the right way and tweaked it a little bit to spread out the conferences to avoid rematches.. it could look like this..

1 Oregon vs 16 Colorado
8 Tennessee vs 9 Boise State

4 Penn State vs 13 South Carolina
5 Georgia vs 12 Miami

2 Texas vs 15 Arizona State
7 Ohio State vs 10 Alabama

3 Notre Dame vs 14 Indiana
6 SMU vs 11 Ole Miss

That would be a great bracket this year.

That bracket also ends the conference controversy stuff.

You'd have every conference covered with multiple teams other than the B12.

16 teams, P4 champs get auto host in first round (just a top 8 seed guarantee). Nobody gets a bye.

13 Guaranteed Bids
SEC - 4 (Texas, Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama)
B1G - 4 (Oregon, OSU, PSU, Indiana)
ACC - 2 (SMU + Miami)
B12 - 2 (ASU/ISU + Colorado/BYU)
G5 - 1 (Boise State)

+ 3 Wildcards
Notre Dame, Ole Miss, South Carolina

eta: I really like some European soccer rule I heard about..
Year 1 maybe like above - during the playoffs, if a conference performs above expectations, they get an extra bid the next year.. if they meet expectations, they keep the same number, and if they are below expectations, they lose a bid.. this would be a badass way to do it imo

So if the SEC sucks in the playoffs this year.. they would get 3 the following year..
but if the SEC is great this year, they would get 5 the following year

I think it will settle in at 16 but I would be happy with 12 and dropping the conference champ and G5 auto-bids. Just make it the top 12 ranked teams.

With the conference champ auto-bid, one year a 4 or 5 loss team is going to steal a spot in the playoff from a more deserving team.
