Does Bama need to re-vamp the S&C program?

Maybe it's just me but it seems like for much of the CNS's run, our guys were pretty consistently bigger, faster, stronger and quicker than just about anyone else. The last couple of years with CNS and this year, it just seems like that's not the case anymore and in fact, we have a number of guys who look fat and out of shape (Proctor and Pritchett come to mind).

Is it due to lack of accountability on the staff? Players not caring? Maybe the current S&C staff is behind the times and hasn't adapted? Not sure what the problem is but it needs to be rectified.

Pritchett does not look fat and out of shape. He looks like he is in really good shape and has just sucked anyway.

Heck, I agree and I don't think Proctor looks fat and out of shape to be honest.

I do think we probably will be moving to a more mobile OL in the coming seasons. I think you've seen that the staff values that, especially with Roberts getting replaced as the year has gone on.

Cochran brought more intensity it seems, but we were losing starters in the offseason constantly.

Often strength and speed gains come with injuries. You want bigger/fast guys? Enjoy more ligament tears that come with it.

I am content with the strength and conditioning program.

Proctor is MASSIVELY out of shape. 360-370 lbs is too much and it’s no surprise he gets beat so often. If he’s not out of shape, (and I think he is) then he damn sure needs to lose his starting spot too.

No, nothing on this team is a problem because of S&C

The line was told to gain weight last year, did, and slimmed down this offseason for it. They look like your average P5/NFL lineman, no one is butterbean on the line

Proctor could probably jostle 15-20 down but wasn’t here much of the offseason. He’s also 6’7+, so 360-370 isn’t wild for his height

They certainly haven't physically dominated anyone since the new staff came in. I'm not sure if that's really S&C or just the way the rules have taken most of the violence out of the game.

If there is a problem there, it's not that they're behind the times. They do cutting edge stuff, so if it's not working it would actually be a case of being too avant garde, not stuck in the past.

Yep, that's called recruiting.

Once upon a time, Kirby Smart wasn't at Georgia. He was recruiting for Alabama. We were cleaning up in recruiting like crazy.

Bama's recruiting composite scores were better than ever in the final years under Saban.

Saban brought in Ballou and Rhea to revitalize the strength and conditioning program. They were ahead of the times with their approach. I believe Saban also started gearing more towards a lean defense as the spread and hurry up became more and more common. When our offense changed under Kiffin, our defensive personnel also changed. As far as the Oline goes, Proctor is the only ones who seems like he has slow feet.

The blow by strip sack fumbles we’ve had this year are due to focus and execution not athletic ability. Proctor and Pritchett were either not ready to go or were not set correctly to handle the rusher. That’s seemingly been the case every time it’s happened.

When they’re dialed in, they’re usually adequate pass protectors.

Proctor had a good year and obviously improved. It was Pritchett who was dominated most every game Proctor has work to do but he had a huge jump in production.

I’m speaking more towards agility. Proctor has a slow step. Sometimes too steep which leaves his inside vulnerable and his stature too tall for edge pressure. I think he’s older, so a little better, but something to work on in the offseason. Shedding a little weight will help. If I’m not mistaken he lost some weight prior to the season starting. Another 25-30 pounds would make him elite at LT.

I do think it was time to move on from Cochran from a S&C perspective and he wasn’t going to be promoted to an on the field coach like he wanted. However, I do think his departure is when we started losing our “edge.” He spent more time with the players than anyone and a lot of players leaned on him for help on & off the field. Cochran instilled a toughness in them that the current strength group just doesn’t have.

To be honest, I think Proctor projects as a guard in the NFL and really should be playing right tackle where you can usually expect more strong-side formation support to chip edge rushers. Our issue is we have a bunch of strong-side tackles and no weak-side tackles who are athletic enough to handle playing without much help against better pass rushers.
