Watching game day and a piece on Curt Cignetti. I know hindsight is 20/20 and I know Indiana isn’t Alabama and the SEC, but why didn’t this guy get a look? He was known, on Saban’s staff, obviously good enough to get a P4 job. Shouldn’t Byrne at least have given this dude a look?
Flame away.
Flame away.

If he keeps on putting up great records at Indiana, he may be on the shortlist in 3-4 years.

Probably because Deboer had a much better resume and LOL if anyone thinks any coach was gonna walz in and win bigly with Simple Jack at QB.

That's 100% on DeBoer. Coaching change is the ultimate opportunity to make personnel changes. He went full chicken shite

Because G5 coaches weren’t getting a look for the HC job. Napier has a similar resume.

I know, it’s a stupid conversation to have, I shouldn’t have even started the thread. It’s just frustrating as hell to see a coach with lesser qualifications go to a school with less talent and be undefeated. He just sounds like a strong leader and personality, which is probably what was needed.
I admit I was absolutely in favor of the DeBoer hire and still am. I’m just perplexed.

A lot of Bama players transferred out or went pro. DeBoer is trying to keep the remnants together, but obviously this was a year to make the best of it. The only thing Cignetti has over DeBoer is a few years of SEC experience.

He’s done a good job for sure. But their schedule has been absolutely garbage. Credit to them for beating up those teams tho.
Bama has had one of the toughest regular season schedules in a while I think. Already played 3 top 25 teams in the last 4 weeks. 2 in the top 10. Still have 3 more top 25 matchups to go with 2 likely being top 15 teams

He might have gotten a look if the best available candidate didn’t take the job.
Just that simple.
Before you get too enamored of Cignetti right now, remember their best win is 5-3 Nebraska. It’s the only team with a winning record they have played.
As it stands, it looks very much like there will be no more than 4 teams on their schedule with a winning record. Exactly 1 ranked team most likely - Ohio State.

Cignetti is 63.
I forget that he is this old. He went down to coach D2 ball after 2010 at UA and didn't end up back in FBS until JMU reclassified while he was the HC there.

He’s coaching at Indiana though. Arguably the worst power conference program. The last coach to finish above .500 at Indiana was hired during The Great Depression. Indiana routinely loses to MAC and FCS teams.
I don’t think Cignetti should have gotten a look because we’re too big of a program to be hiring straight from the Sun Belt, but what he’s doing at Indiana is nothing short of incredible.

How would you have felt when Byrne announced the successor to the GOAT & the leader of the new era of Alabama football is the 63 year old HC of James Madison?

He wouldn't have lost to Vanderbilt.
Amirite?

After hearing Cignetti do a couple of interviews, I’m perplexed at how he and Saban coexisted at the same school. Cignetti is doing an admirable job at IU. But while he was at Bama, did he and Saban not lock horns some? Cignetti seems rather confident to put it mildly. I can’t think Nick would be ok with that much bravado from a staffer.

Doubt it. At the time Cignetti was recruiting coordinator/WE coach.

I can't locate the article(s) but when Curt left Bama the U of A asked him to pay his buyout. As I recall that didn't happen much with assistant coaches.
I believe I am correct on this.

Saban was the GOAT and it to the point that he could not control it anymore. He got fed up with it and retired. Why does people think if Saban could no longer have complete control over the players any other coach out there could.

I’m pretty sure Pat Dye told everyone hindsight is 50/50.
