Ohio State ranked higher than the undefeated team they lost to, who happens to have a more difficult schedule played to date.

Indiana above BYU despite same record and more difficult schedule for BYU.

Ole Miss ahead of LSU, despite losing to LSU and having a weaker schedule.

Georgia behind UT....same aforementioned issues...

Is Sagarin drunk? Will any of the playoff committee members be using his poll for research? I sure hope not...This was one of the BCS polls at one point.

This isn't the BCS anymore, computer rankings don't matter. The committee does all the work now

Meh, Sagarin hasn't been close to being on it in probably 15 years.

Last two years were anomalies as well.

This year is an even bigger anomaly.

Sagarin's code at his best can't figure this season out.

It can happen because while you think of SoS being used in that way, it's most likely not used that way directly. The SoS is just an expression of factors usually calculated seperately.

That said, I've never thought his rankings were good and those look extremely terrible.

Yes.

But the first half of a season is usually really rough on rating systems, which is why the CFP Committee is waiting until November before releasing their first ranking of teams.

Some systems don't even go public until midway though, because there just isn't enough data available from the current year.

But with the committee, some SEC teams will be left out that are better than some that got in. Conference champs getting the bye seems stupid

LSU 29 Ole Miss 26 at LSU

makes the game even

LSU beat SC by 3
Ole Miss beat SC by 24

Idk, I could buy that.

Alabama beat Georgia

Georgia beat MS by 10
Texas beat MS by 22

Perhaps the computer looks at the Kentucky game as a loss.. or maybe because Texas had won all of the other games by a large margin.

The ratings are basically equal. 92.55 vs 92.54, but I would have Georgia higher, so this one doesn't make as much sense as the first 2.

No direct comparable teams. Maybe opponent of opponent.. Indiana has crushed teams though..

At the end of the day, computer rankings generally get better as the season goes on and more comparables can be input into the calculator.

The whole "automatic qualifier" nonsense was added to capitulate to the Group of Five, former Pac-12, and other leagues that would never otherwise make it in based on actual on-the-field results and ranking metrics — it's a participation trophy.

Thus, in order for them to get their trophy, we have to have a championship game.

God forbid we get an overwhelming amount of SEC teams in this thing, so we have to find a way to guarantee that everyone else gets to play too.

In other words, yes.

how is notre dame ahead of LSU? we have the same record and our schedule is harder.

that is just one example.

our record is better than ole miss. we beat ole miss. our schedule is harder and we are ranked below them?

this is crazy.

The good news about them is that by the end of the year, it's damn near impossible to get things too wrong.

But after dabbling in these things myself a bit, I lost all respect for most of the BCS computers. They weren't selected because they had good results, they were selected because good options didn't exist and the PTB didn't know better.
