State is in as bad of position as any SEC team, ever

Third coach in three years. 2 returning starters from a 5-7 team, one of the hardest schedules in the nation.
And the starting QB, who was significantly better than all other options, is out for the season.
State is a 38.5 dog at Texas this weekend. The largest spread ever for State was +33, one of Croom's worst teams against LSU, so Vegas is saying that this is a team worst than the Croom teams.
1-3 and we've played four of the worst five teas on our schedule. We still have road trips to Texas, Tennessee, Georgia and Ole Miss, God help us.

To complicate matters, they get a similar schedule next season too.

Got to have some sympathy for them. Having a good head coach die (a guy who basically changed the way the game is played all over the country) is a hard pill to swallow and recover from.
I wish them well. I'm afraid Selmon is in a tough situation and may not survive. The guy lived right behind me in Chapel Hill. Would talk OU football and his legendary dad and uncles in the alley as the kids played. He was very patient with my Autistic son. Extremely nice guy.
Never like Lebby though. Dude spied on us wearing Tulsa attire for his criminal father-in-law. Should have never been allowed back in Norman.

It's a rough situation in Starkville.
We are late to the NIL game, and still don't have the buy in to be relevant in the SEC. Being "The People's University" is great for social mobility (moving people from the lower class to middle class) - which is something Mississippi desperately needs, but it doesn't necessarily create a ton of wealthy alumni.
Add to the issue that a significant number of our wealthy alumni would rather give to baseball, and you start seeing a major problem forming.

I love that GIF. It fits perfectly with the situation.

Couldn't happen to a better bunch of snitches. I hope you are stuck like this for a decade.

I like most of State’s posters here, and the banter is fun.
However, by and large State fans IRL are a miserable bunch who can’t shut up if Ole Miss stubs its toe, and run to the NCAA if Ole Miss buys a recruit a hamburger.

This. There’s a handful of great posters I’d love to watch the egg bowl with and get shitfaced.
But there’s a LARGE majority I’ve met that are giant asscocks. People like Rosebowl deserve this.

It's as bad as I've ever seen it, and I was in college when State was taking one for the team by giving the conference's 1st black head coach 5 wearisome years of muddling around in the sugar ditch of suckage. The problem this time around is compounded by the current landscape of college football, which also has much to do with my not giving a damn anymore.
I hope the big 12 coach in Lebby understands that disregarding the defensive side of the ball will not work in this conference. If he doesn't he's a dead man walking. He's made some lazy hires and recruiting/portal choices on that side of the ball.
He's here for at least 3 years. Our NIL is not in bad shape at all, so he better get after it with his evaluations and be prepared to make some hard decisions regarding staff. You can't have the coordinators and head coaches all learning on the job in this conference.

I admire this about Ole Miss. As someone who has lived extensively in Alabama and Mississippi, I shock my Alabama friends when I tell them that Ole Miss has everything in place to be Alabama in football. The difference is while Auburn always turns their head because they are probably doing the same thing, State is a bunch of snitches and have historically kept Ole Miss below where they should be.
NIL and transfer portal era - Ole Miss is about to roll. All the pieces have always been in place. Ole Miss doesn't have as large of a fanbase as Alabama, but they are just as committed to excellence.

Is Mass a guaranteed win? There won't be any SEC wins it looks like.

Damn. The only possible win I see left on the schedule is UMass. Brutal.

Could you or someone else fill me in about what happened after Coach Leach tragically passed away? Why was there such a collapse?

Finally.
The Matt Luke to Lane Kiffin transition has opened a lot of eyes and pocketbooks. And much credit to AD Keith Carter and NIL Exec. Dir. Walker Jones.
And frankly, the Hugh Freeze era (though tainted by controversy as to recruiting) showed that we can win… if the right pieces are in place. It just takes a commitment to winning and putting those pieces in place.

I mean, State had no control over the Pirate passing. Football coaching in general is hard. Support your current guy and see what happens.

IIRC, huge exodus from program. New coach has struggled with NIL and the portal.

Leach wasn't a great recruiter. He was a once in a generational coach that could get everything out of his system, and could do it with the type of players that Texas Tech, Wazzou, and State could get in spades.
When he died, the decision was made to make Zach Arnett, a pretty good defensive coordinator, the interim coach for the bowl game. No one had an issue with this.
However, within a few days, they made Arnett the head coach permanently. He got rid of a lot of the staff, and hired Appalachian State's offensive coordinator who got rid of the Air Raid. That offensive system was a bad fit for the talent level at State, and they went 5-7 and had to fire Arnett before the season was over.
Mass transfers happened (Will Rogers is the QB at Washington, Woody Marks is the RB at Southern Cal) when Lebby was hired. Lebby's staff is not impressive, and they hit the transfer portal late and just didn't get great players.
So you head into this season with a third coach and coaching staff in 20 months and a bunch of players no one has heard of.
