A few scripted drives with decent results next thing you know QB is running for his life and for 3 quarters we can’t figure out how to slow down the pass rush and move the ball.

Malzahn had at least established offensive prowess at Auburn. He had great offenses his first two seasons (2013 and 2014). At the start of year 2 under Freeze, we still don’t have an offensive identity. I’ve never seen an offense deflate so quickly as it did yesterday, it was weird. And the silly, careless, stupid mistakes that we made. 4 interceptions, 1 fumble, 6 penalties in critical moments. And from veterans who should know better.

Malzahn inherited good OL talent for his first two years, which gradually diminished. He then left the cupboard bare for Harsin. Harsin burned the cupboard for firewood and then left it to Freeze.

Now it’s Freeze’s job to fix it …… but the facts don’t lie.

This was my biggest concern when Freeze was hired. Coaches like Freeze, Gus, Briles etc were really good 10-15 years ago when their systems were new and innovative. The game has changed so much since then but these guys haven’t adapted. Now these former high school coaches looked lost on Saturdays and real offensive coordinators and coaches are coaching circles around them. You will continue to see much of the same and by year 4 we will be looking for a new coach.

Sure, we’ll get some decent recruits and win a big game here or there. But Freeze will continue to lose head scratching games and we will never make the playoff under this high school coach.

At this point what are we doing systematically that others aren’t?

Yes, Gus was stubborn about benching Jeremy Johnson too.

Back when we hired Malzahn, everyone was looking for a shortcut to competing with Nick Saban and different forms of spread were the easy answer. Saban adjusted, the speed of the game increased. I don't see the dominant spread offenses anymore, yet we hired a guy best known for the same kind of thing as Gus which is baffling.

It's hard to see recruiting not becoming more of an off-field function with the same kind of scouts, evaluators and salesman as pros which, it seems to me, would put an increased emphasis on strong game prep, on the field coaching and I don't see that in Freeze at all to date. I don't think you can scheme your way past disadvantages as easily as you could when Gus arrived, so he's going to have to get better coaches around him. I think he has some of that on defense, but the offensive side of the ball is worrisome.

After a 73-3 start where everything went our way with things looking up, Cal is a hard let down. It is high hopes followed by a hard and ugly crash.

Definitely. All the offseason hype seemed to be coming to reality. Cal drug us all right back to the Maryland game. Will things improve? Who knows, but it feels in the moment really depressing.

Malzahn found a way to win these type of games.

Gus didn't lose these types of games. He had some headscratchers, but this loss and the NMSU loss last year didn't really happen under Gus.

I wondered in the beginning why we fired Gus because his recruiting and offense weren't working...then 2 years later basically hired someone who runs almost the same offense.

Seems like a really odd decision.

Because Freeze is a perfect candidate for the good ol boy network that runs Auburn. Too bad they don’t know shite about football and just wanted to hire the guy they can go fishing with and could point to his “success” at Ole Miss a decade ago to give them cover.

Freeze really doesn't. He says "ideally I want 60/40 run/pass". If you watch his play calling, he lies. He wants to throw the ball. He will go away from the run, when it is working, trying to get the pass game going.

According to Aaron Murray the route trees seemed wonky, and often didn’t leave Thorne a quick check down.

He brought up our rb running lazy routes

He brought up receivers running into each other, not spreading the defense out.

He brought up our receivers and backs running routes that blocked other routes from getting open.

He brought up receivers running wrong routes or doing nothing at all.

He brought up loafing.

Yeah, Thorne did a lot wrong, but for people to single him out while ignoring the mistakes of who should be the playmakers, is not right.

The good news as far as I can tell is these issues are largely correctable.

All except for OL …. I suspect we’re still a year or two away before the OL unit is in the top 50% of the SEC position units … there’s still much work ahead on the recruiting trail

Hate to be that guy, but I've always thought CHF was dollar store Gus.

Which is still decent for a lesser conference, but not in NIL era SEC. Just isn't.
