Inspired by the "worst coaching hire" thread currently on the board - what's the best-looking hire made by a modern college football program that, for whatever reason, ended up being a failure?

I'll start by nominating Scott Frost at Nebraska. He had been extremely successful at UCF, he was a favorite son of the Husker program, and the system he ran just seemed like a perfect fit for what the Nebraska fanbase wants to be. Of course he proceeded to inexplicably fall flat on his face. And before you think "Nebraska is a dead program that will never be revived" remember that Iowa is also basically one big cornfield and yet they manage to sustain a successful football program.

Who else ya got?

Tom Herman should have been better than he was; he burned too many bridges with THSCA and was a generally unlikable jackass, which id forgivable with the right results

Scott Frost was the first person that I thought of. Everyone thought that Tom Herman was a can't miss pick for Texas. He had good success at Houston, worked with Uban Meyer at Ohio State, and had lots of ties to the state of Texas.

It would have been interesting to see what Mike Price would have done but manifest destiny got in the way.

Not me. Reminded me of another Houston coach that went to another Texas school that didn't work out.

Herman at Texas was an immediate thought for me .

I also thought Justin Fuente was really going to do some things at VT but good Lord that program just cna't do anything since about 2006

I agree on Bert. I thought is was a huge coup for the piggies when they got him from Wiscy.

And he's done a good job reviving an awful situation into at least respectable at illinois.

He needed Alvarez to keep him in line. Without him Bert became fat, lazy, drunk and horny and when Sam left he became lost. He got too comfortable.

I agree on all points. I just don't think it was widely known that Alvarez was holding Wiscy together as much as he was.

It appears that he pulled his head out of his arse at IL, though.

I also was a big fan Mullen believer. Cut his teeth at uf with urban. Won in the sec with miss st(at level at or better than Sherrill). Had Florida looking strong first two years.

I thought Fuente was a good hire too. He built what norvell inherited. And up until this year I assumed it was norvell that made him look good especially given his last two years at fsu plus he kept Memphis rolling after Fuente left. After fsu last three games, I’m not sure if that’s true

James Franklin-over achieved at Maryland under Ralph friegdon. Went to vandy and had them bowl eligible and competent. With all Penn states resources and access to recruits I thought it would be more successful than it is. He isn’t doing bad there though.

Sometimes coaches take too big a leap. Herman should've taken the South Carolina job, even if it was just a stepping stone.

Gotta be Bryan Harsin. Never had a chance, was done wrong by the barntards cause he had too much integrity to go along with the sketch yellawood way they wanted him to run the program. I mean the guy beat Alabama A&M 60-0 which we know is an almost impossible feat

That was year 2. I think his first year they won like 6 or 7 games. Even when they won 11 games in 2012, it seemed like a farce.

I thought Holgerson would have been better at UH.
