I imagine the starters about to cycling out at this point, so probably all we're going to be able to draw conclusions from is already passed.

Few things:

Simulated pressure seems to be a big part of the approach

One way we're going to protect the young corners by playing a lot of 7 or 8 man coverages and not leave them on islands.

Overton and Russaw could grow into quite the bookend tandem...and if my assumption above is true then those two are going to need to be stars for us.

Didn't hear Domani's name once tonight (that's a good thing)

The pursuit on this squad is very reminiscent of the Pruitt years and I absolutely love it.

4 man pressure but random DL and backers end up dropping into hot throw zones.

They good

Findley broke the record at Texas State last year for passing yards, they did a great job defending him tonight.

That's why all our DL now have DB numbers.

They did get credited for like 4 or 5 PBUs today from all the batted passes. Finley has a baseball windup though, so not that surprising.

I’m not missing Caleb Downs.
Linebackers and edge rushers looked really fast.
Overton is going to be that guy on the line of scrimmage that we needed.
Overall happy with what I saw

Oatis and Keenan are beasts. James Smith was flashing a lot.

Russaw and Overton were very impressive.

DBs looked good. Bray Hubbard was a surprise. He was in some packages with the starters and made some plays around the LOS.

Everyone looked like they were able to play fast. Not too much thinking or miscommunication.

Cayden Jones looked good when he got in. Freshman middle linebacker. We have some really good young players on this team.

First of all, any time you get a shutout against an FBS opponent, that's a good showing on defense.

This was the first game in a brand new scheme.

What jumped off the screen to me was the insane amount of talent we have all over the field. Oh my God. Saban left us in a great place.

I like the defense overall. I'd like to see a bit more aggression in the playcalling, but this is a defense built to stop high octane passing offenses like many we'll see this year (Tennessee, LSU, Auburn, Missouri, Texas, Ole Miss, etc.)

Grade: A

I saw less reading and more attacking. Guys look like they know they're assignment. The call gets in. We were ready for the tempo. No staring at the sideline up until the ball is snapped.

96, 50 and 10 eating blocks allowing free pursuit by the LBs. We haven't seen that in 5 years.

4 is a unicorn. I was wondering who'd be the alpha up front. It's him.

I counted 9 DBs seeing time before the game got out of hand. Obviously won't be the case in a few weeks but it will matter when depth is inevitably called upon. Long term, 16 is a somebody.

Only negative...the tackling. My god, the tackling!

All that bad tackling and 63-0 final. I’ll take the final score with things to clean up any day of the week.

I thought the tackling was pretty sound for most of the day?

Maybe I’m just so used to the other DCs I don’t know what great tackling looks like but I certainly didn’t see what I think looks like bad tackling tonight. They were all over the ball.

And not only that, it was good form too.

I was pleased to see #11 attacking the LoS against the run. The younger guys have a ways to go with that aspect of the game. #18 attacked the edge really well in run support.

I thought the D played really well. Were they perfect? Nope, but they looked really good. Loved seeing all these young guys get some quality snaps (especially the DBs). I didn't see many busted coverages.

It's pretty apparent we have a lot of quality, experienced depth on the defensive line.

103 yards on 40 passing attempts is spectacular
