Within the SEC, we are familiar with one another’s history.

Who were your greats?

Wilkinson? Stoops?

Brown? Royal?

You just named them. At Texas we generally don't do much coach worship, and that's in spite of our stadium bearing the name of our greatest one.

Mack Brown must be recognized for what he accomplished as coach, but his legacy is a bit tarnished by the way the whole thing ended. He was supposed to step down after the 2009 national championship game and allow Muschamp to take over. Instead of doing that he stuck around for 3 more seasons with sub-par results, then ran away to Florida "recruiting" when it seemed like his firing was inevitable. Of course this ushered in one of the worst decades of Longhorn football, aided by 2 bad coaching hires. Hindsight suggests Muschamp wouldn't be the guy either, but at least Mack's legacy would be looked upon more favorably today.

There is a short list:

- Darrell Royal (167-47-5) (.763)
- Never had a losing season
- 3 National Championships
- Mack Brown (158-48) (.767)
- 23 winning seasons in 24 years
- 1 National Championship

3. Stoops (191–48, 1 NC

PSA: don't remind Texas fans that their greatest coach and their stadium's namesake is a Sooner who still holds the OU record for career INTs with 17. It's a touchy subject.

And cut his teeth at Mississippi State albeit only one year. ETA - oops! two years.

My parents grew up in the Hollis area. Their HS football field is also named after Royal.

If you've ever been to Hollis, it is obvious that the town is almost in Texas. My uncle lived on the Red River and then moved to a house where their back yard was in the Texas panhandle.

Mack didn't coach at Texas for that long. I don't think anyway.

Is pointing out his record from his Tulane and North Carolina jobs in a thread that brags about a program's best coaches the message board equivalent of stolen valor?

And don't remind Okie that the bootleggers boy, and really their best coach, was born in Crossett, AR and was a lifelong Razorback. Just like Bama's greatest coach was an Arkansan, so was Kentucky's and Aggies. Auburn's best coach was an Arkansas, South Carolina's best coach was a Coach at Arkansas before, Ole Miss's 2 of 3 best coaches were Arkansans, and Lane spent some time in Arkansas as a kid and Tennessee's best coach was a Hog coach first.

There are probably a few more. But the moral of the story is..... Arkansas can't keep great coaches in state.

You refrain from doing that and I won't remind you that bloU wouldn't have had nearly the number of wins and championships without plucking some very key players from the state of Texas.

If every school were restricted to recruiting the state of residence, Okie would be literally worse than Nebraska.

It doesn't bother us, say it all you want. But you're correct - Arkansas, either the school or the state itself, has produced a ton of very good coaches.

Another Oklahoma school's coach came from the U. of Arkansas: Jimmy Johnson

...like I sad: touchy subject

Genius-level post, not realizing Oklahoma has double Nebraska's population

Your greatest coach was a Sooner. Your stadium is named after a Sooner. Your 2nd-best coach was a former Sooner asst. coach, and was routinely owned by the Sooners while coaching Texas.

The important thing to remember here is that unlike Texans... Oklahomans don't spend time trashing the state of Arkansas, the University of Arkansas and Fayetteville.

It is hilarious that Longhorn fans trash OU and call it a "JUCO" and claim that an OU degree is "worthless" ......and at the same time have an OU grad's name tacked up on the wall of their stadium.

And I always chuckle at the Texas goofs who claim OU would be lousy without all those Texas players...

OU has four Heisman winners that are home grown and well over half of their All Americans are Oklahoma high school players. And ironically, OU's championship teams were comprised mostly of Oklahoma players. The really good teams that were more Texas centric tended to fall short.
