I’ve been going down rabbit holes lately and the name Fred Akers appears. Historically I never hear much about him. He was before my time. But in his ten years at the helm, he had a few good seasons.

His first in 1977 resulted in playing Notre Dame for the national title.

1981 team finished AP #2

1983 he had Texas within a couple minutes of a national title considering the result of the Miami/Nebraska game.

Overall, for those of you who were around for that era, what were your thoughts on him? Underrated? Overrated? Good?

It sucks to follow a legend. Fred had some great teams & near misses for national titles.

You think Texas fans are entitled now?

Fred Akers did pretty good as a Texas coach. Just not DKR good.

Texas was all poised to become a dynasty, and it didn't quite shape up - so the big money got restless. In-fighting broke out and Akers had to go.

Just offhand he sounds a lot like John Cooper and Bo Schembechler.

Wasn’t he their greatest coach? Or was that Mack Brown?

OMG what a debacle that was. This poor guy was lost. I had gone from broken hearted to don't care. I'm not going to fault Charlie because I would take the job too if it was offered me.

And that "fill-in" AD we had (Patterson?).... what a freaking asswipe. All that was the absolute rock bottom of Texas football. I thought we were done for decades, I mean I had never experienced such suck.

If the Texas brand wasn't there to bail us out, that would have been the end. Thank the Almighty that we crawled out of that hole. I get nauseated just thinking back.

One of the things that got Akers was his terrible bowl record. The SWC in that era of the 1980s through 2000 would often see its conference champ get beat badly in the Cotton.

Dan Devine Notre Dame crushed the Horns in Akers 1978 first Cotton Bowl. He did get a squeaker Cotton Bowl win over the Bear and the Tide in 1982 but then lost to Vince Dooley and Georgia a few years later.

He was 2-7 overall in his nine bowl games including losing to Air Force and UNC in the Bluebonnet Bowl and Washington and UNC in the Sun Bowl.

He got completely blown out by Hayden Fry's Iowa squad in the Freedom bowl 55-17.

Too much to take for a Longhorn fanbase spoiled by the DKR years.

Now imagine what would happen if y’all did that in a reputable conference. You’d live the life of a Tennessee fan. Your blood alcohol level would permanently be above the legal level with all the liquor you’d have to consume to survive

Asterisk

*Aggy was cheating the whole time Sherrill was there.

Aggy got two years of probation and Sherrill resigned in disgrace.

He was very likable, but his game plan was too predictable with too many runs and not enough passing to please the fans. After Earl left that didnt work well.

Didn't his Texas team get blown out against Miami, FL in the 1990 or 1991 Cotton Bowl, 3-46?

I was in Dallas, TX around that time visiting and there were some sad longhorn fans that day.
