A young Steve Spurrier would be an 8 win/year coach in the modern SEC?

If tweet fails to load, click here. According to Disney Gator Twitter spurrier would’ve been a 7-8 win a year coach in the modern sec
Billy Napier needs more time, and if he can get to 8 wins Napier= spurrier
I hate everyone

Spurs won at South Carolina when the SEC was firing on all cylinders, which should put that argument to rest

I don’t know what has gotten into some of our fan base (more than some really) that has them rationalizing every short coming of these loser coaches the uaa keeps hiring

He won 11 games three straight years at South Carolina
I think he'd do better in the NIL days because he was never considered an elite recruiter.

Spurrier forced teams to abandon using mushcamp and smart on defense when they played at uga
You had to put athletes on defense to matchup with athletic spread wr concepts
All spurrier did was matchup on some slow white lb and it took awhile for defenses to adjust

I disagree with this assessment. Spurrier changed how defenses were coached and had a profound impact on the speed required for down linemen. He changed the game and how it was played. A young Spurrier would figure it out in todays game.

So in other words, he was a good coach?

It’s not Spurrier’s ceiling that’s lower it’s Florida’s.
Florida’s advantage has always been proximity to elite talent. That’s less important in the money era.

I would argue that proximity is still somewhat important. One thing will never change in this game and that’s the youth of the players. These are still teenagers who haven’t been far away from their families before. Many of them still want to be in easy driving distance from mom and dad.

The 2001 Florida team is the best team he ever had imo.

bullshite. Were you even alive then? Spurrier was at UF until 2001 and that 2001 offense may have been his best. If defenses can't adjust after a decade, then they aren't going to.

Spurrier would have killed it in the transfer portal. The difference between him and Kiffin is that Spurrier would have been able to coach up the players once he got them.

All he did was revolutionize offensive football. No big deal
His defenses were salty as hell too.

I don’t have a clue who the Kevin Bennett guy who posted that is. But I do know he is a fricking idiot.

lol.. Spurrier somehow got a couple of 10+ wins at South Carolina. He would have been good at UF in recent years.

The more and more I think about Spurrier, he reminds me of my commander on my 2nd deployment. That comparison aside, Spurrier won the Heisman at Florida, won almost 2/3rds of his games as a USFL coach, in Year 3 had DUKE co-campions of the ACC, in Year 1 got Florida to their first ever 10 win season without the benefit of playing in a bowl game because of NCAA sanctions, he absolutely put Florida on the map football wise, and got SOUTH CAROLINA to 4 consecutive 9 win seasons including 3 consecutive 11 win seasons, and 2 SEC East titles in his "yeah, I'm going to take this position because it'll allow me plenty of time to golf" job.
But yeah, a young Spurrier would be a 8 win coach in today's SEC...

I’m not sure how well SOS would do with the recruiting and NIL shite today. But in terms of coaching, he can do that with anyone.

quote:Spurrier - the former Heisman winning QB at Florida - would walk into the UAA office and tell them to set up a collective with TheCAW as the CEO, TheCAW would extort every cent he could from Florida Big Agri, and Florida would be recruiting like the 1980s Cocaine trafficking syndicate that was better known as the Miami Hurricanes.

Was also a different game back then in the SEC from a competition level. Not the way it is today. So not really a good comparison. For example, look at how Spurrier did as the SEC evolved. At S.Carolina he won 8 or less in 7 of his 11 seasons and 7 or less in 6 of 11.
And when the SEC changed, Spurrier switched to an offense that ran Lattimore some 40 attempts per game and he still won 11 games in those seasons. Spurrier did so well at South Carolina people completely lost their frame of reference for what a good season at USC historically looks like

Steve Spurrier won a conference championship at Duke. The guy could have won in any era. He just so happened be in his prime during a period of transition for the sport, a period which he took full advantage of thanks to his scheme and philosophy. He changed the face of the Southeastern Conference and paved the way for the offenses we see being run by virtually every school in the SEC in 2024.
