This the same coach that was falling asleep in the dugout with a mask on in the Knoxville Super Regionals.
This is a desperate hire by Tanner and USCjr. I guess Elander turned them down, along with the other candidates. Surely PM wasn’t the #1 candidate, right?

Guess what Paul has that Tony V doesn’t? I’ll give you two guesses.

Do you honestly believe that Elander would have turned down the HC job at South Carolina if it had been offered to him?

That was at 4:30 this afternoon.
A lot has happened since then.
It's not over 'till it's over
ETA: bigdickrick ... oh, and frick UTjr

PM won’t be getting to Omaha at 66+ years old. Vitello made him retire in Knoxville and he left crying and scared. He seriously said the fans at the game were nasty and made it difficult for him.

Truth. Just ask Mark Stoops.

This is just a really, really bad hire South Carolina. Wtf are y’all doing?

Not unless he actually believes he’s the successor to Vitello or is waiting for a bigger job. The culture at Tennessee baseball has coaches like Frank Anderson not interested in becoming a HC again. He enjoys his job as an assistant under Vitello and has said this himself. Anderson is a former HC at Oklahoma State.

Successor to a 40 year old doesn’t really mean much at all

He's 65, usually coaches don't want to start over at that age.
CPM seems to be the exception.

He just wanted to work a little at Home Depot after getting bored

Mainieri is a good man and a solid coach but if I were a USC fan I wouldn’t be exactly thrilled over this. I personally would have taken Godwin because he’s younger and has done a hell of a job at ECU.

Anderson hasn't been a HC since he was fired in 2012. No one is looking to hire him.

Mainieri announced his retirement after the SECT, but you knew that already

Recruiting would be my concern but nil could be the equalizer

This was a very unexpected hire, but I'm thrilled with it. Especially with the staff that he's building. Bringing Terry Rooney from LSU in as a pitching coach and retaining Monte Lee are both big pieces.
SC has previously failed with continuation coaches (Chad Holbrook) and mid conference level coaches (Mark Kingston). Mainieri is at least a proven commodity in SEC baseball. None of the other candidates fit that criterion.

quote:not desperation at all - this is more a Ray Tanner ego move that caught some Gamecock benefactors who'd been led to understand that a 7 figure+ salary baseball coach would be Dan McDonnell and his SC ties - off guard -
This is a desperate hire by Tanner and USC
Tanner got Carolina what he claimed - a proven HC with Omaha experience - albeit one that has not been in a dugout in a couple seasons - but the CWS ring speaks for itself - it appears he's also gonna get another personal want in all of this - with Lee and his deep SC/GA/NC baseball ties to remain in USC's dugout -
the only real concern is if PM is fully committed/able to return to the dugout and grind that is SEC baseball - he's clearly got the cache and results more in step with Richardson Raines & Ray results of 1970-2012 -
