They said no to LSU because LSU doesn’t have the funds to get top guys nor the staff to coach up guys in their price range. They blew too much on gymnastics, and women’s basketball. It’s a budgeting issue with a coaching issue for funsies.
If LSU was standing on principle and not seeing big (relative to sport/game) NIL deals then sure, fight the hood fight. But 2 million to get Daniels from ASU? Nabers got half a million, etc. makes Kelly a hypocrite. When they had money they spent it.
This is dumb on so many levels.
First you say they don't have the staff, Bo Davis is recognized as an elite DL coach in CFB.
Then you say Jayden Daniels got $2 million, not even true.
Then you talk about Nabers, a Tiger who got paid. Kelly has said several times that he'd rather pay proven players on the team vs random transfers looking for a bag, which is how it should be.

2.2 million, I know the round numbers were a mistake

1.25 is overpaying him. He was rated out as in the 30s last year for defensive line college coaches. Football scoop hyped him up because they are bed with sports agents.
quote:. Then he should have recruited better. But let’s look and see if that’s reality(LSU Dline depth chart has 4 of the 6 as upperclassmen transfers)
he'd rather pay proven players on the team vs random transfers
And shockingly, they all had NIL deals before going to LSU and all got paid via NIL at LSU.
So save the sanctimonious bullshite. LSU would pay if they could, they couldn’t so the didn’t and running crying about “We OfFeR sOmEtHiNg DiFfReNt At LsU” is disingenuous.

I'm still confused as to why some of you are trying to insist that Kelly is against NIL/paying players.
He's said the opposite multiple times.

Because he literally said LSU doesn’t want guys looking for NIL deals. The “we are selling something else” statement he hid behind and the LSU faithful believed.
He could have said the players didn’t fit what LSU is looking for. He could said they were not willing to go all in unproven guys in his system. He could have said the guys have been a luxury because more depth in the trenches is always a goal but coach David has absolute confidence in the guys on the roster. He could have been really honest and said he needed another booster to embezzle from a children’s hospital to build up the war chest.
But nope he said we don’t need to buy players.

No he didn't, he said he didn't want guys who were just looking for money.
They're absolutely paying guys, he just doesn't want someone who is only looking for a fat paycheck.

If Brian Kelly offers a player and LSU puts out an NIL deal, and the player asks for more and LSU gives more to the player, is Brian Kelly and LSU buying players?

Depends on the context of the deal.
If the kid is only coming to LSU because they're paying the most, then yes, that's buying a player.

I disagree completely.
If LSU raises the offer, then they are buying the player.
The "building relationships", "facilities", and "scheme fits" have less weight than Brian Kelly's waist line.
And LSU is using the bag to get the player. That literally is buying the player.
Edit to add: LSU doesn't even have to be the highest bidder to be buying the player. The second they raise their offer, they are involved in commerce/supply and demand. It isn't personal. It's business.

Do you believe Georgia buys players?

Yes. Even if they weren't bought out of high school, they are renegotiated continuously while at UGA.
We can find common ground that UGA/LSU are not trying to "set the market" for players. But I promise you that both schools will when they feel pressed. Both schools will when the supply and demand economics dictate it.

I don't disagree with you, I don't think schools like Georgia and LSU are going to significantly outbid everyone else simply to get a player to sign with them.
They aren't going to try to get in a bidding war with a school like Ole Miss because quite frankly, they have more to offer than a school like Ole Miss.
Now if a kid is getting a $700k offer from Ole Miss and Georgia is only offering $500k, will they make it a little more competitive?
Probably. That's a little different than simply trying to pay the kid to pick your school though.
Giving the kid fair market value isn't the same as money whipping him to sign with you. Brian Kelly is just saying he isn't interested in the latter.

Are you paying attention? Kelly can sign a full class of incoming 5* freshman, but they will abandon ship for the highest bidder next year. It’s the new reality, so play the game or get left in the dust.

This thread is strange. When rumors of NIL began, the majority of posters here were in favor of players getting paid. Now that NIL is reality, the majority of posters are against players getting paid.

All players don't go to the highest bidder.
In fact, a lot of them don't. There is still something to traditional recruiting, you better offer a competitive NIL package too though.

Now see... he was specifically talking 5* and you turned it into "all players." That is the only way your "a lot of them don't" has a chance of being true. Vague challenge is vague.

The problem was and is that Brian Kelly didn't send out a qualifier on what he meant. That seems to be your job. The National News Cycle picked his comments up in a flash and now Kelly might have a PR problem. At the least, he will be explaining this to future portal candidates.
Kelly may not be Dabo with the way he pushed himself into a NIL/Transfer corner but he can't say he's not bidding at LSU when he's bidding at LSU.

This is a lie. That TCU DT who went to OU made it crystal clear he was leaving TCU to get more NIL money. His handler publicly said so. He wouldn't have visited Baton Rouge without a nice offer on the table.
quote:Hmmm....
LSU may not be buying players but that is only because they are trying to buy players and are failing.

So players ego, team chemistry and team culture don't matter any more? Just how much money you can throw at a roster... I don't believe you...

Did Saban have a PR problem when he said A&M bought their recruiting class and Alabama didn't?
