The upcoming loss of the OU-Ok State rivalry reminds me of a once-classic SEC rivalry....

.....that we no longer see on an annual basis: Auburn vs. Georgia Tech.
First played in 1892 and played every year since 1906 until 1987, this game was among the nation's most storied. They've played each other only twice since, in 2003 and 2005.
I really miss this rivalry, probably more than any other in all my years of following college football that began in the early 1960s. It was a classic "Southern Rivalry", with both schools only 109 miles apart. It needs to be renewed, soon.
I hate to see the end of the Sooners-Cowboys rivalry, too. "Bedlam" is classic stuff in the heart of Americana. Its loss is reminiscent of the disappearance of the Nebraska-Oklahoma rivalry. While the Cornhuskers/Sooners rivalry was more for national laurels, "Bedlam" could easily match it in excitement and suspense. It's going to be greatly missed. Conference realignment and everything else is ruining college traditions....I miss the good ol' days.
Other games I'd like to see return on an annual basis that we don't see anymore or will be disappearing beginning in 2024.....
Georgia vs. Clemson
Michigan vs. Notre Dame
Oregon vs. Oregon State
Washington vs. Washington State
USC vs. Stanford
UCLA vs. California
Florida State vs. Notre Dame
Florida vs. Miami
Arkansas vs. Texas
Utah vs. Brigham Young
Auburn vs. Florida
Auburn vs. Tennessee
Penn State vs. Pittsburgh
One good thing: It'll be nice to see the Texas A&M-Texas rivalry renewed in 2024. I'll be watching.

Yes. It’s a shame we’ve lost so many annual rivalries.
To my grandparents, Georgia and Georgia Tech were our two biggest rivals (we didn’t start playing Bama again until 1948).

Not playing UGA next year is a fricking travesty. I don’t care if we lose that game 90% of the time. It should be taking place.

This is one of those lose/lose rivalries for oklahoma....most lopsided in state rivalry (at least it was at one time, probably still is) 91-20-7....if we win big deal...if they pull one off it's like a super bowl win....frickem.

Just feels weird not playing Tennessee Georgia or Florida this year

Don't both teams have to reasonably win some of these games to be considered a rival?
Under those circumstances, BAMA vs Miss State coming to an end must be killing everyone.

That series has always been a slaughter, 91-20. From 1945-1995 Okie St won only 5 times. Go back to sleep old man

Not even close, that series was actually competitive at 49-38 OU

The Civil War is still on this year.
Is the Backyard brawl still played every year?

I’d much rather fill it with a less lopsided rivalry, hopefully one will organically form in the SEC. Always seemed like a courtesy call for the overall state. Not much gain in it for OU as a brand.

Notre Dame v Penn State
Miami v Penn State
Miami v Notre Dame
Wv v Miami
Wv v Pitt
All these could happen under a new and improved big east. It won’t happen but we need to pare down conferences to ten-or twelve team leagues again.
Regonal & Former rivalries would move the needle more for me than USC VS Maryland.
Also would like to see Nebraska v OU again.

Had Georgia Tech not left the SEC, it would be interesting to have seen how future expansion would have played out. I assume South Carolina would have not been invited to the SEC.
Additionally, I think Auburn would likely have been placed in the East. Auburn should have been in the East anyway from a geographic and rivalry standpoint… but the SEC office wanted to spread the Big 6 out, 3-3 so Auburn had to take the fall.
The only reason Auburn agreed to go to the West was the 5-2-1 schedule format that allowed Auburn to play both Georgia and Florida annually. Of course the SEC broke its promise and the Florida rivalry ceased in 2003.
Had Georgia Texh remained in the SEC, this is how many meetings Auburn would have had against various rivals through 1991:
95- Georgia
94- Georgia Tech
68- Florida
65- Miss St
56- Alabama
43- Tennessee
33- Vanderbilt
26- Kentucky
26- LSU
16- Ole Miss
Like I said, it was already ridiculous that the SEC separated us from Georgia, Florida, and Tennessee to put us with LSU and Ole Miss… who at the time we had almost zero history with… but had Tech still been in the league, I think it would have been nearly impossible for them to have done so.

Good post, First time I have ever agreed with you on anything JetDawg. The Auburn-GT rivalry was a classic, the greased train-track incident is a classic piece of cfb history. There’s honestly no team I would rather play yearly (aside from UGA) than AU. Another interesting point, if the game scheduled vs. GT at a neutral site in 2004 had not been cancelled (and replaced with a patsy) and Auburn had won- the strength of schedule increase probably have gotten them into the BCS title game

Ou-Okie lite was never a rivalry and bedlam was never in the same universe as OU-Nebraska.

Seems strange to see "GT" & "SEC rivalry" in the same sentence.

LSU/Tulane is kind of a forgotten rivalry but the Tulane fans who kidnapped Mike the Tiger and dyed him green in the 1950s should never be forgotten. Sometimes you have tip the hat even when your team is the butt of the joke.
