The 247 Vandy website is reporting that Vandy had to pay Stackhouse $26 million. And that "Stackhouse did not give any back." Full buyout paid.
Apparently, he got an extension after their 19-17 2021 season when they finished 11th in the conference.
This has to go down as one of the worst contract buyouts of all-time. Hilariously bad.

Hopefully they hire someone worth a damn this time. Haven't been the same since Stallings. Hearing a lot of Chris Mack rumors.

Gonna buy a lot of suits.
Not that he needs them.

As an A&M fan, we are experts in bad contract buyouts. So, I can in fact confirm, that’s a really bad buyout for Vandy to have to pay. $26 mil buyout for a guy that never made the tournament? Ouch.

This is worse than the Jimbo buyout imo

Vanderbilt has traditionally been good to at least decent. Their fans got tired of falling completely off the map. I don't blame them even though I would've hoped Stackhouse survived.

Vandy's AD who gave Stack that ridiculous contract extension.
I have no idea why, unless she grew up a Sixers or Pistons fan or something. If she thought Stack was going follow Penny's path of "success" at Memphis, then she should be fired.

On one hand, it's crazy that anyone cares enough about the trajectory of Vandy basketball to pay that. Who is making a huge stink such that this was prompted?
On the other, good on Vandy for being able to throw around big money to address the clamoring of what is likely a pretty small group of folks.

Why should he, or any coach for that matter? That's the terms of the contract. Don't like the contract? Don't agree to its terms.

We brutalized Vandy. I was honestly surprised they didn't fire Stackhouse then and there. And the who is Vandy hoops fans and alums.
Memphis is another ready to make a move. Neither one wants to sit around and watch Tennessee be a top 5 team while their own team is in the gutter.

Should have just kept him for the remainder of the contract. Vandy is never going to compete. Just be who you are and save the money.
And as others have stated, he deserves the full buyout because its in the contract. Dumbass ADs.

With how much that city loves Penny, I see them having much more patience with him than Vandy w/ Stack. He just landed a 4* transfer too.

Amazing how every couple of days someone comes out with a new bigger number. Imagine how boring it would be to deal with actual facts. This is way out of line of other numbers released by those in the know. This feeds the narrative that our AD must be fired. While I have lots of problems with how the coaching situation ( he should have been fired last year) was managed by the AD, I’m tired of these random escalating numbers. Hope we get a great new coach soon. Wish Stackhouse the best - probably best coaching in the NBA again.

Vandy doesn't really have an athletic department in the sense that other SEC teams do, and their athletic decisions are driven by their academic/political agenda, and they saw a black coach with a winning season (19-17) who was recruiting pretty well and wanted to give him a long term contract.
I am not politard. I have quite a few Vandy friend grads (live in TN) and I've heard this from several of them.

Should've NEVER fired Stallings... he was a mainstay in the NCAA tourney. He's got to be laughing his arse off at the losers they brought in after him.
