Unless you are the head coach, why wouldn't it be a stepping stone?

Not having Saban coach will end it for a while once we find someone decent. Grubb was never fully committed and never coached a down for Bama. That said, you can’t expect someone successful to not accept a better opportunity.

What do you mean stepping stone? Nothing is a destination for coordinators.

Short of going back to losing to NIU, UCF, La Tech, etc, on a regular basis, no, not really.

Any way for us to stop assistants from leaving for higher paying jobs? Yes, we could hire coaches so crappy no one else would want them. Barring that, one way might be to dangle a cash or other bonus (house, etc.) in front of them. If they leave early they don't get the carrot. Would work for some people, who wouldn't want to lose something they've put time in for. Seems like the Barn used that for some of their coaches years ago.

While most coaches seem to be ambitious by nature, with all this NIL and portal stuff to contend with, I wonder if more coaches don’t just remain as coordinators where you can make a killing and avoid unneeded stress.

Yeah, we can hire shite coordinators no one wants. Saban tried that and we all hated it.

The only way to stop Alabama being a stepping stone to the NFL is to hire bad coaches.

This is the old factory worker in hometown and the guy who wants to own the factory thing. Had you asked me halfway through Kirby’s career if he wanted to be a head coach I would have said no. Sometimes people know what they want early and sometimes they take decades. Comfort in one’s job is what keeps about 90% of the country from finding something better.

Some programs and NFL franchises aren't giving coaches near enough time to prove themselves. Unless you have a former player or a guy that just doesn't wanna move up this will continue to be an issue IMO.
