I’ll drink whiskey and beat my wife in remembrance of him

Yep, unfiltered Chesterfields, at that.
His doctors at one point told him he would die if he didn't cut down to less than 5 cigarettes per day.

Moral to the story - unless your femoral artery has been severed, you can't find a torniquet, and would bleed out on the way to Birmingham, DO NOT go to DCH.

man was a legend on & off the field.. not always in the "best ways" but legendary nonetheless.

First picture I've seen that showed him smoking.
I quit in October and it's not easy. I do cheat with a cigar with my bourbon though.

Says the trash poster that comes into a thread telling us no one cares. Why do you need that much attention. Maybe your boyfriend will do better.

I wonder why if Bear was having chest pains on Jan 25 and the docs were worried about the high likelihood of him having a massive heart attack at Druid City Hospital, his physician did not immediately send him to UAB. The latter would have been much better equipped to have managed him.
As an aside, I was in Tuscaloosa on Jan 26, 1983 to teach a class and it remains a very memorable date for me.

He looked a lot older than 69.
Say what you want to, but the man was the best there was, and still a legend....Here's to you, Coach!

I know this is easy to joke about decades removed, but for some perspective think about how sick you felt when you learned about Mike Leach.
A lot of legend and lore is probably just that (and it certainly gets inflated over time), but in all seriousness I still remember that day and will never forget the sight of that funeral procession.
I guess what I mean is, sure, today this seems sort of silly, but it was a hugely significant event at the time that affected many, many people in a real way.

But that was pretty good.

Bryant's death and adoration in 1983 were far from silly. I dare say his Sunday afternoon postgame Coke and Golden Flake show was likely the most watched event of the week in Alabama in the 1960's (which was followed by Shug Jordan's Auburn Southern Bell-sponsored postgame show). I have no doubt that had Bryant run for Governor against George Wallace, Bryant would have won in a landslide.
