LSU goes out and poaches Notre Dame’s winningest coach.
Bama settles for a flash in the pan NAIA guy.

There's just no way to replace a legend like Saban, not without some tough times and dark days ahead for the Tide. History has proved this. It's the college football laws of physics. I told some of my Tide fan family members, get ready for about 10 years and 3 coaches and a few trips to the Citrus bowl before Bama returns to the top. Just keeping it real.

After Kirby,
My list would have been Ryans, Urban, Kiffin, and Sark… in that order.

Saying Lanning had more talent is disingenuous when the most important position had a 1st round QB that’s being compared to Pat Mahomes vs Box freaking Nix. Lol
Who on God's green earth is stupid enough to compare Penix to Mahomes?
Penix was a very good college QB but some of the descriptions and comparisons being thrown out there are asinine.

Just look at college football coaches from the 60’s until the late 90’s. You had Bryant, Paterno, Royal, Spurrier, Bowden, Woody & Bo, Parseghian, Holtz, Osbourne, Neyland, Schnellenberger, and Jimmy Johnson. All those guys are just to name a few. We do not have Coaches of that stature in the game today now the Saban is gone.
Part of the reason is that schools aren't as patient with coaches now, so it's always a revolving door and you don't get a guy at one job for 15+ years.
The "hot take" portion of society also is a detriment as we constantly say someone "sucks" if he isn't absolutely elite.
For instance, Bobby Bowden was at Florida State for roughly 17 years before he won a natty.

I think Kiffin would have carried the torch but old Joey Freshwater had too much fun for that to happen lol.

Bigger salaries command bigger expectations.

quote:well now that mensa had its say we have
Saban, Lanning, Sark, and Norvell.
Saban, the guy who just retired
Lanning, a guy who also only has 2 years of power five coaching same as deboer (and only 2 years head coaching total), in the same conference as deboer, with a much more talented roster than deboer, and who is 0-3 against deboer.
Sark, a guy who only has one good season as a head coach out of 7, and is 71-49, 2-4 in bowls, and 0-1 in the playoff, and is 0-2 against deboer, also with a much more talented roster
Norvell, 69-32 1-4 in bowls, just got blown out 63-3 in a bowl game
This is about the level of answer I was expecting. thanks

Hypothetically speaking what would this place look like today had they gone back down to Miami and stolen the current Dolphins HC?

Kirby, Sark, or Urban would never happen. Dabo probably would never happen, either, but he doesn't scare me now that NIL and the portal are things.
This here.
Lane probably wasn't called, but if he was, no way he's coming back to Tuscaloosa to have Nick tell him how to do his job (again). He would absolutely win at Alabama
I don't really care what Lanning's record against Washington was. He won enough games to be a serious candidate, and he has experience with Saban, Kirby, and the SEC. That makes him a scarier choice than DoBro, in my book. He'd probably be fine with Saban being down the hall, too
I'd put Norvell about the same as DeBoer, and Drinkwitz slightly less
Alabama hired the best coach they could, given the circumstances. I don't think it's a bad hire, but I'm not losing any sleep over it
Lane or Lanning would have irritated me

2 things:
1. You obviously don’t follow the NFL at all. Pat was the 10th player drafted in his draft. He wasn’t without flaws in college
2. The comparisons are all over the internet. Trying googling before you crap on something you know nothing about.

quote:NIL and the portal are game changers. They've stripped an immense amount of authority over the players away from the coaches, which will soon spell the demise of college football and basketball. A tell-tell sign will be a lot of really good coaches exiting the profession altogether.

Dabo was on the level of Saban for a hot second but has fell off drastically. We just do not have big time coaches in the game anymore that everyone would just die to have and it’s sad because nothing is better than watching 2 legendary college coaches square off against each other.

Mahomes was a raw prospect with enormous upside who was a rookie at age 21. Penix is a 6 year college player with limited upside who has already torn both ACLs. He will be a rookie at age 24.

Those people are stupid, then. Penix doesn't have nearly the arm strength, mobility, or improv ability of Mahomes. Not even remotely close. He's closer to Hendon Hooker than he is to Patrick Mahomes.

I bet Lane would kill it at USC too.....
Lane is one of the most overrated head coaches of our time. He's a very good offensive mind, but an average head coach.

People say this but he has third highest winning percentage in the conference at freaking Ole Miss.

With an awful record against ranked teams. A train load of baggage and a whisker away from self implosion.
