Do you still look at high school recruiting the same?

I used to follow it but now I loosely follow it because of the portal recruiting. What about you?

Definitely not. I'd say 25% do 3 years of playing time at this point. NIL money will probably get you more talent than anything. Money talks, BS walks. Losing talent and coaches has hurt Saban more than anything. He can't win by hording talent like he did in the past.

Yeah it crossed my mind with the unlimited transferring fewer will graduate.

I gave up a while ago. With Bama paying players under the table and no one honoring their commitments, it was hard to get invested in it.

Not really about who signs the highest ranked class now. It's about who is best at retention of the classes they sign.

I don't look at it quite the same...
But I still stick to the fact that if your team got a player my team wanted.... YOU CHEATED!!!

Why would you? To me, recruiting is now a year to year thing across classes. You have to re-recruit practically your entire team every season. Blue chips any given year will be on a wait and see basis with programs with larger bank accounts.
I would absolutely hate being a college football coach right now. Without contracts or proper rules for NIL, it's far worse than being a pro coach.

I still say it has to form the nucleus of your team
It has definitely changed qb recruiting
Trying to get portal players all on same page is a challenge

I think quality matters for high school. I expect a 75% 25% split for the majority of teams going forward. Maybe even less of a delta …

The unlimited free agency for players is going to have a reckoning at some point. The carrot will be schools or associated 503 paying the football players, the stick will be contractual agreements that require all parties to consent to ending the contract before terms are complete (with a litany of player and school advantaged termination triggers of course).
We're in the Wild West era of NIL+transfers because the NCAA has abrogated their interests on this front due to a litany of litigation Ls. Eventually the power players are going to agree that something must be done to rationalize the labor-side business of the sport. Part of the reason the NFL doesn't have a D-League is because they know most of these high schoolers are poisonous assets to hold. Eventually several school's collectives are going to get over-committed to dead weight and the money is going to demand a reckoning.

It is already happening. I’m interested to see how these collectives work out because some of these boosters have put a lot into kids that aren’t even starters yet. They will want a return on their investment

What an interesting day for a Bama fan to make a thread about how he finds HS recruiting less relevant lolol.

Alabama continues to recruit well according to the services, so yeah, it is weird. I still think having the first pass at talent is preferable to having to recruit them on limited eligibility timers.
Fit is imperative for transfers. They're looking for a place where they can come in and start. Many are looking at how well you can help them get to the NFL too. Do you run a scheme that features their skills well.

No. With NIL leveling the playing field and making bag men obsolete, the quality programs will do well and the snake oil salesman will move along. Recruiting is more fun than it’s been in a long time.
As of today, Saturday, Texas has room for 4 transfers, w/ 3 of those committed. Another 0-5 may enter the transfer portal.
Of the 2023 recruits, ~ 75% are early enrollees and will be on campus next week and will go through spring practice.
Identifying the right guys w/ the commitment to graduate early, and not the prima donna’s, matters.

2 observations...
1. Teams who recruit the best HS players seem to do the best over time. This is still true.
2. LSU has added TWO transfers who both won the Heisman Trophy over a 5 year period. Before that, LSU has never had a qb win the Heisman and only 1 Heisman in over 100 years of football.

Yeah Alabama is recruiting well. But, I think we have an average coaching staff in place so I question our player development at this time. I think player development is as important as player retention.
Say what you will about Harbaugh and Norvell at FSU, but I think they've done an excellent job of recruiting the portal and high school along with player development. I feel UGA and Bama recruit at a similar clip but UGA has a better staff/better player development than Bama.

No. Because of the portal, signing a good player only means you’ll have them for one year. When you actually had to sit out a year to transfer, that deterred a lot of the nonsense. Outside off the field stuff and getting dismissed, transfers were rare

Where will their return ever actually be outside of personal happiness seeing their team be good? I just don’t see how it’s sustainable for boosters to continue to invest tens of millions each year when there is no financial incentive like there is for a pro franchise owner. Like what’s really in it for them at the end of the day?
