This weekend marks the end of an era in the history of college football

For me, it's quite sad on several fronts.
The first college football game I ever saw with my own eyes was Georgia @ Southern California at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on October 7, 1960. There were only 28,000 fans in that enormous arena that sat over 101,000 people. It was John McKay's first season as USC's HC, who would go on to become one of the sports most legendary and successful HCs in history.
I grew up a Trojans fan and went with my dad and my older brother to cheer on the Cardinal and Gold. The Trojans would win that game against the Bulldogs, 10-3. Little would I know that I would later decide to attend UGA as an undergraduate student instead of USC (later returning to USC to obtain my Master's), and become a Bulldog-at-heart.
That was 63 years ago. College football has changed a lot since then. But, it hasn't changed nearly as much as it has in just the last 5 years. This sport has been going through a whirlwind, a sea storm of techtonic change that even I, a former writer and cover reporter on the sport for ABC and L.A. Times, couldn't have forseen at the turn of this century. I hardly recognize it anymore.
This weekend we'll witness the end of the Pacific-12 Conference when Oregon and Washington play for their championship. I just can't fathom it. I still can't fathom USC & UCLA no longer being a part of it, deciding instead to bolt for the 3 yards and a cloud of dust conference better known as the Big 10. How dull. How stupid.
It will also mark the end of the partnership between the SEC and CBS Sports. This was a marriage made in sports heaven. How delightful it was. How sad it now is. What a downbeat to end the season on.
My two born-and-bred favorite schools, Georgia & USC, are heading in opposite directions, it seems. One is shooting for the stars....the other becoming a shooting star. Change. Constant change.
Oh, well. The uniqueness of college football with all its pageantry and color seems to have gone with the wind these days. Many pine for much of the old days the way it used to be. I'm included.
As one star goes out, another one shines brighter and brighter. The star I'm betting on is..............
GEORGIA beating BAMA and going on to win its 3rd CONSECUTIVE NATIONAL TITLE!!!!!!!

I enjoy spending my time with some old motherfrickers.

I also hate the fact the Pac 12 is dissolving. It's a shame that Southern Cal and UCLA couldn't have worked something out with the league. Surely there were some legitimate efforts.

As a Stanford alum, I must simply point out that frick USC.

Enjoyed reading that.
As a child born before 1970 I share the sentiment of the PAC 8, Pac 10 and PAC 12. USC, UCLA were always formidable and Arizona St could have some really good squads as well under Frank Kush. Don James made Washington potent in the late 70's and that carried through to a national title in 91.
PAC football will be missed.

I don't think we've seen the last of the Pac-12. That east coast travel is going to get old very quickly for SC.

Jesus, I was wondering why you were writing like that. It all makes sense now.

I don't give a shite about the PAC whatever but this end of the CBS partnership with the SEC is horrible. It didn't have to be this way. It's on CBS, not the SEC.
The SEC offer on the table was $300m and CBS gets first pick of games for their 3:30 as they do now.
CBS balked.
SEC signed a better offer.
CBS ended up paying $350 million to the Big Ten for second or third choice in games for the 3:30 slot.
That's every year for ten years.
Ooooooooof.

The forward pass. It brought all this on us. Now not only did you have to have players, but you had to have guys who could throw and some who could catch. Now the schools pay over a mil so one guy on the team can throw the ball.
