One sack all game. How many QB hurries did we have? Suspending logic and common sense is thinking that putting another two or three guys on the DL somehow impacts the QB when they hadn’t impacted the QB all damn night.

Chex, I normally agree with your stuff, but you’re wrong here. It’s ok. I also won’t go full corch, but I can assure you, you’re out of your depth here on the football IQ bit. Hell, just look at the clip posted above. Roberts had half the defense in the endzone. If he can’t trust those guys to stop a Hail Mary…

Aubie Sp96,
There are ways to impact the QB without sacking him. Your only metric you're offering is sacks. That's no good for you.
Look at that gif above. Milroe threw unprovoked and whenever he wanted to. Two extra rushers might've had him running left to right or right to left or forced his eyes to focus heavily on rushers and that would've helped distract Jalen from finding the 1v1 at the perfect time. Fact of the matter is even when we didnt sack him there were other times we chased him all over the place.
Another thing, we dont even have to appeal to logic. I havent seen anybody offer a defense for Roberts other than Freeze.

Most of these Hail Mary plays QBs have plenty of time, in particular when they have a good OL like Bama and would have been allowed to hold as much as possible. After sleeping on it, I’ve come to the realization we weren’t supposed to win. 8 players to cover 5, cmon, he threw it after like 3sec which was enough time for the WR to get down there and zig/zag to the corner and the throw was an absolute bullet in the only spot it could be put. Just think, if they didn’t get it, the center and Milro would be getting destroyed right now. It was luck, pure luck and it went their way.

The whole fact that Milroe can throw it precisely and on a rope convinces me defending that play like a typical hail mary is the wrong play. As you said that frozen rope got there quickly so help defense could not converge. We needed to force him to find the 1 v 1 less comfortably back there. You dont want 50/50 balls to even be possible on 4th and 31.

Most Hail Mary throws with time are for 50+ yd, where a college QB starts to lose accuracy and can’t fit tight windows. Giving the QB time and space on a 50yd doesn’t really affect the quality of the pass
That’s not the case for a 31 yd pass. QBs in todays game w time + no pressure should be able to find favorable coverage and make a catchable throw

Okay Ron Roberts, can you clear up why you half rushed two and had a spy doing absolutely nothing in the middle of the field?
This is the correct question and the right person who should be getting raged on, if you feel so inclined to shite post someone.

quote:Chex is on point here. What is/isn't a Hail Mary is dependent on the QB's arm strength. A Hail Mary is at the edge of a QB's arm strength and thrown with a high trajectory with long hang time - and is generally inaccurate so defensive players in zone coverage have time to converge.

This was absolutely not a Hail Mary throw. That's the problem with only rushing 2. Rushing 2 - the defense doesn't impact the QB's throw at all. Might as well rush 0... Bama spread out its WRs and had Milroe throw pick one guy to throw to on a rope... he had 6 seconds to pick that guy which is insane. The second issue is having a QB spy that isn't rushing. With most of the team dropped in zone in the endzone, defenders are facing the QB and can come up to make a tackle. There's no need for a spy.

Thank you. a 30 yard throw for Milroe is a relatively easy throw. There should have been more pressure to help rush his decision making and increase the chance of an errant throw.

I personally don’t even know why this is being discussed. 2 non rushers and a spy on that play is the dumbest thing we did all season. Hell, for years.
There is a reason 4th and more that 30 yards “was” 0-90 in college football

Have there really been 91 attempts at a 4th and 30+?
Hugh was also on the losing end of 4th and 25 against Arky when he was at OM. He’s now given up the 2 longest 4th down conversions in college football history.

It's being discussed because it lost us the game. It's being discussed because it is in fact the most retarded defensive call I have ever seen.
This play call bothers me way more than Koy muffing the punt. We should be 7-5 today having knocked Bama out of any playoff discussion, but we are 6-6 discussing the worst defensive play call EVER.

I agree. But people trying to defend that play call is amazing.
Not even 1 person on the earth should think it was a good defense. Not 1.
The people responsible should be tarred, feathered and shamed a 1000 lashings.

Oh okay gotcha, and no one should defend that call, I agree.

quote:Exactly - additionally, the spy in that situation is a completely wasted defender because everyone else should be in the endzone with their eyes towards the quarterback following defenders with their peripheral vision.
There should have been more pressure to help rush his decision making and increase the chance of an errant throw.
You don't even have to sack the guy. Just making him unset his feet, take his eyes off of downfield for one instant, shift the pocket slightly, or let him see a flash of off color jersey in the corner of his vision.
Any of those things can impact the throw.

What defenses were run on the other 90 "4th and 31s"?
Half-joking....
