Have we become a toxic fanbase? Do we expect perfection from players? Seems that way. We have always been a very very rabid fanbase but never remember except the last 8 or so years how much vitriol our fans have toward coaches and players.
I understand it’s a different time and culture is passing me by. And the 20 and 30 year olds are becoming the new fan base and I’m good with that. But is the new attitude healthy for a sports program whether it be football or basketball. I mean how often do you hear a fan call a player “thrash” because they don’t live up to what the fanbase wants.
Just musings from an old guy. So some folks last night talking about Johni after the game that he cost us the game. Just seemed weird as hell to me.

Seeing Alabama and UGA dominate has cause this, most likely. It’s tough being on the outside looking in.
Also, people are fricking weird now a days. Emotional.

I can think of some very average athletes: Jake Holland, TJ Lang, Thorne, etc
They will all beat our asses and take our wives.
They still suck

If that’s the case we should be mad at UGA and bammer

Every team has average athletes and disappointments. I do t keep up with other fanbases. Are they like that?
Is this the new normal?

Yes other fanbases are the same. Most of my friends are uga fans and every week in our group chat they are crying and whining about players and coaches any time the other team makes a first down or they have to punt.
As much as i don't like dabo he was spot on talking about those fanbases where they expectation has surpassed the appreciation.
Ours is obviously more from a point of frustration because we've been terrible but all fanbases are pretty much the same

We just went through the worst coach at Auburn since the great depression so of course we're going to be worked up.

It's toxic culture, from which our fanbase is not immune.
I remember the days when you had to be an expert in your field before your opinion mattered or really before anyone outside of your immediate sphere would even know what you thought.
Now, every a-hole who read a tweet or saw a tic tok has an opinion, and they want everyone to know it. It's broadcasted across social media and folks that are easily "educated" or swayed adopt moronic takes, based on 144 characters.
These morons are usually the loudest.

A lot of it has to do with social media, too. In the past, the average Joe could complain to his buds, and there were call in shows and all that, but it took a while for a negative consensus opinion to work its way out into the general public. Now, folks are bitching on Twitter or whatever before the game is even over.
Example: I admit that in 1992, I was one of those twats in the student section chanting, "We want Nix" after Stan White threw a pick-6 against Arkansas. My friends (fellow AU student at the time) and I had been down on White for quite a while by that point. But I remember it being reported in the papers the next day like, "Hey! The Auburn students are down on White! Can you believe it?" Now days, the people who started shitting on White from his first incompletion would be broadcasting it to the world literally within 5 minutes. It happened back then, too, but only the folks within shouting distance of the bitcher knew it.

The run that Saban has been on the last 15 years has caused most every fanbase of traditionally successful cfb teams to expect success far beyond reality. It's even worse in the SEC. But whatever "it" is that Sabam has is EXTREMELY rare. Guys like him come along extremely rarely.
Auburn won it all in 2010 and made us all believe that we were gonna be right there in the top 5 with Bama every year. We had 2 bad years. malzahn came and took us right back to the championship game. We were certain that we'd be in the hunt every year. In reality, we had just caught lightning in a bottle again in 13 like we did in 10'.
Any sec team that has had a taste of success the last few years has had the same craziness from the fans. They get that little taste of success and start thinking they're the next Bama, no matter how unrealistic it is

Social media and TV has made it 1000x worse

There's bad winners just as there's bad losers and unfortunately we're surrounded by the former on both sides.
Plus it's the loudest you hear and they want to make it personal.

Farm league for the NFL just like before except now we pay the players out in the open. Need to go get an MBA from a D2 or D3 school just to have some real football to cheer for.

Well I actually disagree to some point. I think that a certain percentage of our fanbase has lower or tempered expectation.
This is probably worse because you become apathetic. Look at football. I had no thoughts that we would beat UGA, A&M, LSU, OM or Bama. I only hoped that we would be competitive or not get embarrassed.

Every fanbase is toxic as frick. But yes, our fanbase is incredibly toxic. I think the time between the Tubbs firing and after the Chizik, hire was one of the lowest points in Auburn fandom. It's too easy to broadcast an insane and inflammatory view to millions of people instantly. No accountability has been a recipe for disaster.
The culture on this site can be unnecessarily vicious.
It's not going to get better.

I have just learned to expect and accept the toxicity, because it’s here to stay. That genie is not going back into the bottle. Best thing I have ever done is to never have opened a FB, Twitter, Instagram or any other social media account. Only LinkedIn because it’s a quasi-requirement for company visibility. Things are only going to get much worse from here on as you can’t shackle the Internet in a free society.
