Odd Thought: Alabama fans from 2001 are the last to experience a Tide upset OF Auburn.

The previous such incidents would be Iron Bowls 1990 and 1984 & 1985
Any veterans here? What's that like?

2001 was the last Iron Bowl I attended, figured that was a good place to stop. Some old lady tried to trip me while going down the stairs when I yelled "how about the jungle now!" after Santonio's TD.
Whoops.

Watched that in my dorm room at Paty Hall. Good times.

84 and 85 were surreal.
In 84 we expected to lose and when we stopped auburn on “wrong way Bo”, I’d never been in a louder stadium. What many people don’t remember is that AU had a chance to win the game on a last second field goal that they missed. We stayed cheering for a very long time. Made up for losing in 83.
In 85 we thought we could win and during the back and forth in the 4th quarter it looked like Auburn was going to win and I thought we had lost. We had struggled to score touchdowns, but had moved the ball pretty well all day, but time was against us. A fourth down conversion and the huge pass to Richardson set up the 52 yard field goal. Back then, not many of that distance were attempted, much less made. Auburn fans knew they had won when we were stopped at the 35. When Tiffin’s kick went through, it went from silence to pandemonium. Seeing the Auburns fans faces of defeat after so much smugness of victory is something I’ll never forget.
Probably how they felt after Ed Scissum’s fumble in 97.

Was in school during 2001 and it was awesome. We thought they would easily beat us and win the SECW. Beard ran all over their arse and it was obvious they had not prepared whatsoever for our running QB (Zow). I remember Tubbs being so smug after the game and taking a shot at Fran saying he had been playing the wrong QB all year (Watts had been primary starter).
Not technically an upset, 1999 should probably be on the list.
- First win ever in Jordan Hare.
- Season had been a roller coaster with loss to LA Tech and upset of UF in the swamp.
- Trip to Atl for rematch with UF on the line.
- I won't call it a battle but QB uncertainty between Zow and Watts.
- We trailed going into the 4th.
I was at that game. Vowed never to return to Auburn again for an IB after that. Their fans were the biggest shits before and after the game.
Funny story is I didn't even have a ticket. One of my friends had a cousin that worked the gates. We all slipped him a $20 instead of a ticket and walked right in.

Not surprising since you can't upset a team you've favored to beat and Bama has been favored to beat Auburn for 15 years in a row.

This was my experience at the 2005 Iron Bowl. I said never again after that. I said never again to Iron Bowls in general after the 2010 "Camback" and their fans were complete assholes after the game. I get it, big comeback win at rivals stadium but they acted a fool after that game and a lot of them got their asses beat.

Robert McGinty was the Auburn kicker, and the holder was a guy named Mann (don't remember his first name). The Birmingham News ran a story after the game titled "Mann's humanity to man" because he was consoling McGinty after the miss.
Paul Ott Carruth was a workhorse in that '84 game.

I remember the play-by-play guy yelling "Get out of bounds, Greg!" as Richardson lunged for the sideline on that completed pass. And then the radio team's repeated "It's good! It's good!" after The Kick.

Not sure I'd call '85 an upset.

There just aren't words to describe 1984. Bama blew a 17 point lead and Kerry Goode got hurt in the first game. After that, they proceeded to lose to everyone with a pulse other than Penn State. It was the first losing season since Ears Whitworth. Auburn had Bo. They were still in contention for the Sugar Bowl. Nothing said Alabama stood a chance.
For obvious reasons, everyone remembers the goal line stand but Auburn had another chance to win the game. They missed a 35-40 yard FG with about 10 seconds left.
Auburn may have been favored in 1985 but didn't feel like an upset at all. Both teams were pretty danged good and the game showed it.

'85 we lost 2 games by 2 points each, and had one tie.
Played aTm and Penn State non-conf.
9-2-1
Probably should have been 11-1 though.

Yeah, he went full homer. It was great.
On the ensuing kick, Fyffe's Auburn call was even better for an Alabama fan. It went something like:
"There's the snap, the kick is up"
Followed by a dead flat monotone "Alabama wins."

'boogs Porter was offsides on the game winner.

They did throw the flag for that, didn't they? I don't remember.
Pat Washington, the Auburn QB, was asked after the game about his reaction. He said he thought Auburn had the game won when they scored, and then again just before the Al Bell reverse to convert the fourth down. After the completion to Richardson, he said his thought was "Oh man. And that guy can kick."

When we beat Auburn in Tuscaloosa, it’s memory-holed and never really remembered. Everyone just goes on with their life. If the beatdown was bad enough, Auburn mitigates the damage by firing their coach a few days later.
If Auburn beats us in Auburn, it’s woven into the fabric of college football history.
IMO, every time we beat AU down there, it’s an upset to me. We could take an all-Saban team in there to play them this year (or any year) and I still wouldn’t feel comfortable.

Been to every Iron Bowl in Auburn but 4. And a divine force intervened to keep me from those 4. 93, 97, 2005, and 2013.
1999 was so awesome. Shawn Alexander run it down their throat in the 4th quarter.
2001 was great. Funny incident in the stands after the game. And old timer was coming down the steps and a young Auburn student confronted him saying she bet he didn't even go to school at Alabama. He told her oh yes I did I graduated in something something. She said well I bet you don't even know the fight song. He burst out the fight song as pretty as you please. She turned around and walked off. Fantastic! And then Fran took a lap around the field. fricker. Another thing awesome about that year was that both bands were on the field for the National Anthem due to 9/11.
2011 was probably the worst for being heckled. Updyke this Updyke that, don't poison our trees. Blah blah blah. Nobody said a word on the way out.
2017 sucked. Kept thinking Tua would come in. But things turned out pretty good at the end of the year yea?
