Have to feel Kentucky will make a change. Maybe mutual. Cal looks tired. And I think the game is passing him by.
They’ll shoot for the moon..Billy Donovan, Jay Wright. Then move to maybe Scott Drew. I think Oats is on the list but some people with national championships on the shelf will have to decline first.
I think Drew may be realistic. I know he’s been reluctant to leave Baylor, but would he turn down Kentucky..

They can't afford both buyouts. It would be over $50/million to fire and hire, and that's before the guaranteed money Oats would command to jump.
I realize it's UK basketball, but they don't have that kind of dough laying around.

Maybe, like NS, Cal will realize the game has passed him by with the NIL stuff and retire into the sunset and stay on as a consultant.

Cal’s problem is he’s still believing in the 1-and-done roster model when unlimited transfers allows you to artificially age up your roster.

I think this is possible. The old guard is getting out..Coach K, Boeheim, Roy Williams..I don’t think Izzo and Cal are far behind. The game has left them behind.

The game didnt pass Nick Saban bye. He just got sick of dealing with the bullshite from this generation of players. He still knew how to coach and get the most out of his guys. He knew how to work the transfer portal. Its just that being a head coach turned into being a 24-7 ball licker for a bunch of young assholes that want a ton of money for their recruiting stars. So Saban decided he wasnt going to do that shite. The game didnt pass him. It took a left turn into some new neighborhood and he didnt want to follow.
Cal is a little different. He is still using the same strategy he came up with 15 years ago and it doesnt work anymore.

His last hires at OC says otherwise. He was getting up there in age and combined with the new landscape he was good on forcing continuation

This paradigm shift in college sports reminds me of No Country for Old Men.

Getting old and retiring doesn't equal the game passing someone by.
It seems that the game has passed by Cal, but that wasn't the case with Coach K or Saban. Coach K went 32-7 and made the final 4 in his last year. Saban won the SEC and made the playoffs.
There's a difference between retiring in your 70s because you're old and tired of all the new BS and sticking around and being ineffective. There's also the case of Jay Wright who retired at 60 coming off a final 4 because of all the BS.
Cal has let the game pass him by. He hasn't won an SEC regular season or tournament title in 4 years. He has won 1 tournament game in that span.
Of teams that have had the same coach over the past 4 years in the SEC
Bama : 97-38
Tennessee : 95-36
Arkansas : 91-47
Auburn : 87-40
Kentucky : 80-46
Texas A&M : 80-47

Cal's buyout is $33 million. Oats' is $18 million.
I went to Rupps Rafters (i know, it's Kentucky Tide Fans), and they obviously want Hurley or Billy D first. But it looks like Scott Drew is the top realistic choice. After that, a lot of them want Pearl. Not as many people calling for Oats compared to a month or two ago.
They're definitely in a tough spot. Whether they fire Cal or not, they should for their AD first.

Those folks aren't realistic. ISU coach is legit and shoukd be a candidate. They always want the big dog, when said dog was Otzelberger a few years ago. Darrian Devries needs a look as well.

Honestly, yeah. Iron strengthens Iron - SCar played a weak schedule in the beginning in the season and it didn't prepare them for a lot of the pick-and-rolls Oregon was putting up.
Gotta pull through today, though.

Why is there such a discrepancy in the amount of games played?

Not everyone plays the same amount of non conference games and you have the SEC tournament and NCAA tournament.
Kentucky, for example, has played 9 SECT and NCAAT games in the past 4 years.
Alabama has played 16 (including today's game).
