Always interesting to see ex-Dawgs journeys play out. We always hear the sad stories about transfers getting denied or kids left in the portal…but I’ve always found it interesting how JT has navigated so many schools.

Anybody hear how he’s done it? I believe he was a grad transfer to WVU if I remember, correctly.

Have guys like Luke Ford or most recently Tez Walker impacted negatively but JT has been fine navigating.

He’s actually having a really good season for Rice outside playing Texas in the opening game and losing 37-10. Leading the American conference in passing yards right now

Doing well again tonight.

I think in their 2 losses outside Texas games, he threw it very well and might not have even thrown a pick in the losses

ETA: he did throw a pick in the loss last week:
loss to USF - 27/40 435y 3TD
Loss to UConn - 33/49 362y 2TD 1INT

He went from 5* phenom at USC to Our Only Hope at UGA to West Virginia for basically nothing, and now at Rice with little to no NFL future.

I'm not dogging on the guy, I'm just saying the comment "navigated the portal well" isn't what I think of. Put it in opposite order where he started out at Rice and worked his way up to Mr Badass at a big school through the portal would be more along the lines of "navigated the portal well".

Dude had 5* talent for sure. He was plagued by injuries bad. Knee and shoulder. Tough to come back from all that. I would say he navigated portal well for himself to be able to continue playing the game he loves as a starter. Rice offense was a good fit, without the talent. Won't get drafted...in fact, 2 Daniels will go ahead of him Wouldn't be surprised if he was on a roster next year as QB3 tho

Not shitting on the guy, and wish him the best, but there’s been shady shite around him everywhere he’s been. His first few games, he threw dimes. My gut feeling (and I know nothing) is he didn’t have what it took to be Georgia QB and Stetson did.

If he didn’t have what it took to be Georgia QB, Kirby wouldn’t have started him to open the ‘21 season.

Daniels was and is good. He got hurt, Stetson was playing well and Kirby wanted to keep the train rolling.

The truth is, we probably win the natty that year regardless of which of the two QB’s started. However, Stetson ending up being the guy was better for us in the long run because it allowed him to improve over the course of the year, leading to the great postseason run he had in ‘22.

JT was just the snakebitten character in the saga and ended up a CFB journeyman. shite happens.

He was not whole in the opening Clemson game and got hurt. He came back but got that bad chest contusion in the Vanderbilt game (I think it was) and Stet took us the rest of the way.

How has he been immediately eligible so many times?

He got injured in the first game of USC's 2019 season and was basically redshirted that year and granted immediate eligibility to play for UGA.

Wasn't the transfer to WVU a graduate transfer? Aren't those one-time things?

How was he granted immediate eligibility again?

I get what you mean, but we also started Dwan Mathis in the first game of a season, so that doesn't mean much. JT is the equivalent of a AAAA baseball player in my opinion.

JT gets sacked 7 times at least against Bama, too. I don't think we win without Stet.

and he was benched after one half, so obviously the coahces realized he wasn't the guy pretty quickly. And I mean what were our other options? JT wasn't healthy to start 2020 and jamie newman quit at the start of fall practice. So our only options were dwan or a walkon stet who nobody knew at the time would be what he ended up being.

Stargin dwan in 2020 wasn't a bad decision whatsoever at the time.

Ehhh, I'd say if you start a guy, remove him at halftime because the moment is too big, and the backup comes in and plays well and wins the game for you, then that was a mistake to start him.

The coaches, for whatever reason, never gave Stet a chance until he forced their hand, but a lot of the players weren't surprised at his success due to his performances in practice.

I think that players on defense know who should be QB1 more often than the OC does. Our defensive guys were always for Stetson.

That was my point and question. I’m not talking about “navigated the portal well” and landed in better spots. He’s been able to transfer and not sit on multiple occasions while others can’t get 1 time transfers.

Yes, I’ve googled. Never saw anything. Other than injury and grad transfer, he was able to use the portal to his advantage and go play immediately. Is that better?

He got his degree.

Immediate eligibility with the degree.

I think they should do away with the 1 time free transfer and forced kids to get the degree if they want immediate eligibility.
Otherwise, they can sit a year (maybe work on that degree).

Not fond of the new breed of mecenarys that constantly bounce around looking for a landing spot...

Imma old and realize it's the new face of CFB tho.

Love my school and team but I've went from an avid supporter (45 yrs of season tix all my donations to the AD, parking, 2.5 hr ride each way etc) to a Big Screen fan...

That works once. Also, one must seek a graduate degree that isn't offered at the previous school.
