New idea for 8-game schedule. Why not 4 permanents? (LONG)

Full disclosure, I'm all for the 3+6 format and wish the big whigs or whoever would get over themselves ab playing another conference game.

However, in this idea, you would get to play 4 permanent teams every year, then rotate the through the others every three years despite only playing 8 games.

Do that by placing all teams in four, 4-team pods, who would be permanents of one another, then have one other permanent in the next division. All teams in pod 1 have a perm in pod 2, and all in pod three in pod 4.

You would then have a 5th, semi-permanent that you would play twice every three years, again all teams in pod-1 would be matched up with a team in pod-3, and pod 2 would be matched up in pod-4.

The remaining 10 teams you would play once every 3 years, and would go to every stadium every 6 years, much better than the every 12 year system we have now and would keep the schedule at 8 games making all the higher ups happy as well as keep all the rivalries intact.

An example of how it could look:

YEAR ONE

A B C D
@B A @A @A
C @C B B
D @D D @C
@E @E E E

G G @G @G

P @P P @O
A @A @A A
B @B @B B
@C C C @C
@D D D @D
@I J @K L

Then just plug in the teams for each.

TEAM DECODER Example

POD1
A) Alabama
B) Tennessee
C) Kentucky
D) Vanderbilt

POD2
E) Auburn
F) Georgia
G) Florida
H) South Carolina

POD3
I) Mississippi St.
J) Arkansas
K) LSU
L) Ole Miss

POD4
M) Missouri
N) Texas
O) Texas A&M
P) Oklahoma.

So in the example, Alabama's permanents would Tennessee, Kentucky, Vanderbilt, and Auburn, + they'd play MSU 2 out of 3 years, so on and so forth, but you can match it up however you like.

Anyway, since it seems like we'll be stuck at 8 for a bit, it seems the consensus concern is losing rivalries, so this is one way to fix that.

I prefer the 5-3 model with 8 games until ESPN ponies up for a 9th game, then make it 6-3.

How about something simpler? You can do a 3-6-6 model in an 8 game format. The only difference is you play every team every 3 years instead of 2. You have 3 permanents, a group of 6 teams you play every 2 years, and a group of 6 teams you play every 3 years

Hypothetical LSU example:

3 permanents
Ole Miss, A&M, Florida

6 teams every 2 years
Odd year teams: Bama, Miss St, Kentucky
Even year teams: Auburn, Arkansas, Texas

6 teams every 3 years
Year 1: UGA, Vandy
Year 2: Tennessee, South Carolina
Year 3: Oklahoma, Mizzou

The problem you run into is matching home and away games year in and year out, which is where podding the teams together really helps.

Lack of symmetry doesn't sit well

I hate the idea of pods and not sure why so many people keep suggesting it.

I will happily accept any method that allows us all to continue to play all of our rivals every year.

It doesn't accomplish that at all. In the example cited, the Iron Bowl goes away in exchange for Alabama playing Kentucky every year. How does that preserve the rivalry? Just because Tennesse plays Kentucky every year doesn't mean that Alabama should.

Expand the schedule to 10 conference games and play 2 non conference games (1 P5 and 1 cupcake). It's as easy as that.

That's what I was going for. I'd rather play Mizzou or South Carolina once every 3 years as opposed to every 2 and lose annual games to LSU and Arkansas.

For an 8 Game Schedule, I would prefer the 2-10-3 format. 2 Perms. 10 teams that play a home & home every 4 years. 3 Teams home & home every 6.

You would play every team in 4 years and keep the important yearly rivalries.

Auburn Schedule for Example.

True. One simple tweak to make that work though is instead of alternating the 2nd group every year, you play a home and home with that group 2 years in a row, and then do a home and home with the other 3 teams.

Here’s the thing, Disney is paying the conference a shitload for these rights and they don’t want to have to wait to get big matchups they can sell like Oklahoma going to the Swamp and things like that. That’s just the reality. If that means some rivalry games only happen every other year they are fine with that.

This is why LSU-Alabama isn’t going to go away in a 9 game scenario. It makes too much money.

You can lament that and I understand where you’re coming from, but if you want the conference to stay at the top end of the sport you need to generate revenue. It’s that simple.

I wouldn't be too sure about this just yet. Just sayin, I'm being told and have been told different from the start. The SEC went to Destin to get the scheduling format done and completed going forward. That didn't happen. They just got one season settled. That should tell you all you need to know. We wont know until next spring. It will be a very tense few days in Destin.

The only thing wrong with that is that for those of us whose end of the year rivalry is versus another P5 program, we lose a shot to play a marquee OOC team, unless you opt to play 12 P5 games while others only do 11

Well yeah Alabama is going to tank the 9 game schedule over it, which is hilarious given the shite we got about a balanced schedule for years.

Because of the money and competitive issues we're looking at only 8 games.

That's not enough for all rivalry games to be played. The question is whether the majority decides on a 1-7 or something like three fixed opponents and rotating 4 or 5.

I like the pods because they preserve more than the 1-7. We'll see.

To be perfectly honest, this is a great topic for the off-season.

I am really for just picking the schedule a year out like they did for 2024.

Quit worry about 3 + 6 + 6.

Programs change all the time. Let some schools have more permanents than other (max 3).

Quit worrying about equality because so much can change in a year or two.

Just pick the schedule a year out like the NFL does

I honestly like what the B1G is doing.: There are a few permanent games, but you’ll playing everyone else at least twice (home and away) and nobody more than thrice, in a five year period. Granted, their list of protected games is absolutely too small compared to what we have.
