On one hand, one could argue we rushed that play to not allow a review on the previous odd catch for first down.

But, that notwithstanding, what was the plan for that pass?
No doubt Benson was out there with no one on him.
He more than likely could have scored a touchdown on that. Would that have been wise, even if it put us up by 12 at that point?
Would have been about 1:30 to go.
Crazier things could have happened giving the ball back to aTm, even up two scores.
Would Benson run to near the goal line and fall down deliberately?
Just can't figure out why the pass was even done.

I think Jalen didn't realize the situation that the game was over

I don’t care if he was wide open. Three knees win the game. Take the knee.

Same - he thought we still needed another first down and we were gonna steal one there. And somebody is going to say "the staff should have told him", but other than taking a timeout (which we definitely didn't want to do with 25 seconds on the play clock), there really isn't opportunity or reason to do that with all the other communication going on.

He just made an excited, stupid decision and did it so quickly nobody really had a chance to stop him. Coaches immediately let him know it was stupid, too. Luckily it didn't cost us.

Serious question. Is Milroe calling plays? Cause how would that be on Milroe if he doesn’t?

75% of the plays we call are primary run or pass plays with a pass or run play tagged to them if the box is heavy or light. That's why even when we "audible" you rarely see us moving guys all around changing to a totally different play/set. The audible is really just letting everyone know we're activating the run or pass tag. Milroe saw Benson wide open and just threw him the tag (which in that case was just a WR turn around quick throw - which generally would be used if the DB was 8 yards off ball or something for a quick 4-5 yards).

They didn't call a pass play, they called a run play with a pass tag thinking obviously we don't need to say AND DON'T CHECK TO THE PASS TAG UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES.

Personally, I'd have preferred we just started taking knees once the math didn't work for A&M to stop the clock. As was reinforced a few hours later in Coral Gables.

Better question. Why was it such a crappie throw? Lol

That one I absolutely know the answer to - he was so excited and so rushed that he just grounded that sucker

Ever had a chance to swat a fly that's been in your house all day. Then finally it lands on a nice flat surface. You get your fly swatter. You remind everyone that you have the highest kill rate in a hundred mile radius. You ask for complete silence and for nobody to move. You approach from the perfect angle. You get in perfect striking distance. You close one eye for extra accuracy. You unleash the most careful swat in the history of pest control and miss by 6 inches. Had you just walked up to it and hit it you would have killed it. That's what happened to Jalen Milroe.

Very much like the pass from Croyle to Hall at the end of the 2005 Alabama/Arkansas game. DJ was so wide open Croyle nearly threw it at his feet because he rushed the play to get the ball to him before anyone could realize he wasn't covered. IIRC, they had a draw play to Darby called and he was still expecting the ball and the only guys that knew the pass was happening were Brodie and DJ.

All the great logic about the play notwithstanding, I was so excited to see Benson standing there alone that I raised my hands Kiffin like, knowing we had another easy score. I really wanted to see it too. : But alas Milroe Milroed the pass and we were denied the exclamation point !! ending to a terrific victory.

I get it that not every pass is going to be on the money but holy cow, when it comes to short passes, it's almost impossible for him to throw a good one. It's usually WAY over their head or at their feet. So weird.

Jalen wasn't able to grow up playing NCAA football on a PS3 and it shows.

I give the kid a break thinking he did what he thought was best under the conditions...

He saw Benson waving [near or after the snap] and went to him immediately.

(They did look like they wanted to get the play off [even Jase probably wasn't certain what happened].. the team should always be prepared to get a quick one off)

Regardless, There is a least one whistle blown as he threw the ball, while in flight and too early for it to have been from the bounce.

I think he knew something we didn't.

It’s the thought that counts

As far as absolute boneheaded decisions go…it was a pretty good one

Benson didn't have anyone to cover him. Had the thrown caught, it would've been a huge gain or a TD.

Nick Saban on his postgame TV show, The Nick Saban Show, on Jalen Milroe not taking a knee on the final series: "Jalen throws the ball when the game is over. The only reason we were going to run a play is we were hurrying up to run a play because we didn't know if they would review the knee being down on the conversion. Otherwise we're kneeling on the ball. He throws the ball out there and stops the clock.

"Just things like that are all, sort of, learning lessons we need to learn from so we don't have those issues in the future and give our opponents opportunities."

You'd still take a knee. Keep the clock moving.

Yes? Why would you not want to score a touchdown in a 6 point game?
