and the refs, plus officials in the booth, appear to look for it at every hit, why has coll football gone soft on other player safety items?

You players wearing shorts, and mouthpieces hanging from face masks like an air freshener from a review mirror. What will need to happen before they start enforcing players to put in their mouthpiece and players have to wear pants with leg and knee pads? Maybe some teeth knocked out or a banged up knee?

I wish I had a hundred up votes to give. Looking like softball uniforms out there.

Telling ya, it’s headed toward flag football in a decade.

Those 7-on-7 summer leagues are the new model. Linemen better get their money while they can.

^^Because these are all self-imposed injures. If a guy get his teeth knocked right out, it’s kinda on him for hanging his MP on his face mask.

Targeting (while confusing as hell), is imposed by another player.

Watching the Jags-Bills this morning, a Jags LB sacked QB Allen late in the game in what was not a dirty hit at all. Not even a hard hit on Allen. But, a 15 yd PF was called on the Jags because their facemasks touched.

Ridiculous.

There are way more knee injuries than brain injuries too

Because targeting rule is an attempt to limit concussions. That matters because concussions are being studied, legislated, and lawyers are/have been trying to win big judgements in civil trials — MONEY!

Politics, lawyers, media “narrative” = change in the game.

Football is a brutal sport. Those who choose to participate in it assume the risks associated with it.

The targeting rule is installed for one, and only one reason: Perceived Safety.

There are still as many, or more injuries than ever before and numerous players suffer a concussion every single week.

Why can a defensive player get penalized for grabbing a face mask, but a running back can grab a defensive players (aka stiff arming) and it’s not a penalty? Why can an offensive player lead with his helmet when trucking a defensive player? Safety first right?!

We were just talking about this this morning. I'm not even sure what you can and can't do anymore.

The pants thing is obvious and jerseys to a certain extent, where the rule still says the jersey must meet the top of the pants. I see guys every week with basically midriff jerseys. I dont even think its required now to have hip pads. I look for players to honestly wear legitimate shorts before long.

Knee pads prevent stinger type injuries, not major twisting injuries.

Mouthpieces protect teeth. Would suck to lose them, but a little cosmetic dentistry and you’re good.

That said, the rule book says pants should be below the knees and mouth guards must be worn.

I know the SEC called penalties for these in the 90s and early 00s with Bobby Gaston as director of officiating.

Targeting has nothing to do with player safety and everything to do with the ability for the NCAA to defend themselves in potential future lawsuits.

probably because knee pads do nothing. if they did something people would wear them.

also most players put in their mouthpieces before the snap.

the game is being destroyed from the inside

spearing has been a good rule for 100 years

"targeting" and "launching" and "helmet to helmet" was created by figs who never played the game, and hate the game, and want it destroyed
