And almost 70% of them are from out of state.

They had a few years when they were trying to make nice with Montgomery w/r/t in-state enrollment in hopes of courting more state funding to make up the difference.

We can probably figure out how that went.

If it was a city, it would be Alabama's 11th right behind Florence. That's a lot of students.

I don't put a ton of stock in various "rankings" because of subjective methodologies, but it's pretty safe to say that this path hasn't enhanced the academic ranking of the university. It keeps going down while out of state enrollment goes up. Correlation?

Make that money while the bubble is going. Hope they have a plan for when it pops.

Bama isn’t plying games with the DEI methodology USNWR uses now so they are getting crushed in the rankings.

It’s stuff like “what percentage of your students use Pell grants?” along with any other proxy they can use for race/LGBT mix without saying so explicitly, none of which has any relation to the objective quality of the educational content being provided.

I don’t like the 65-35 out state mix at all, but the students being accepted are academically competitive if not superior to those who attended 20-30 years ago.

All major colleges are all about DEI. Hell, they added "promote equity and inclusion" into the capstone creed.

I will always love the university, but the system is completely broken. They've built what is essentially a 4-year resort for well-heeled out-of-staters using federal loan dollars. Absent some major scholarship money, I just don't see myself sending my kids there unless it's for one of a handful of majors, and only after transferring from a 2-year community college.

My plan is for the kids to go to Jeff State for 2 years and then transfer. If they get some good scholarship money, then that's different, but my son is the exact opposite of the type they're looking to give scholarships to.

I've never heard this before.

Not a single starter on offense is from the state of Alabama...

If when I was school is any indication, they were competing for minorities but they were competing for hispanics that were whiter and more well-off than myself (a white guy from rural Alabama).

Alabama is a better academic institution than it was when I started there in the aughts. It is actually a regarded research institution now. UA System use to even treat it like the mission was to be "football school" and let UAB get all the research dollars.

I think it was around 19,000 when I graduated in 2004. Crazy. Don’t even recognize the campus in the area around the Ferg.

It's insane how much the campus has grown. As others have said, I don't even know what half the buildings on campus are for anymore. Then again, I graduated in 1987.

As far as the out of state ratio thing, I have kind of mixed feelings about it. The out of state kids provide large amounts of revenue to UA. On the other hand, you kind of hate to see the culture of the University veer away from the state.

My theory on the reason UA is accepting so many out of state kids is as others have said, they bring more money and are probably better qualified academically than a lot of instate applicants and thus (in theory) making UA look a bit better.

Also, by accepting so many, I'm thinking that the University is kind of playing the long game here and hoping that more alums means more members in the alumni association, more $$ donated to the University and building a bigger endowment.

Where are you going to send them, Liberty?

Every school has issues with DEI pressure, Bama (and AU) are far better than most.

The majority of college students anywhere are female, who are the majority of law and medical school graduates. Our boys better get sober and start studying.
