Can we talk about Freeze’s weak answer about the Georgia rivalry?

He wants us to compete for the love of our people not out of hate for other people.

Barf.

1. Besides a few psychos of every fanbase you don’t really truly hate the other side. It’s a healthy hate.

2. The hatred is what makes sports fun.

3. Hatred helps most people perform at their peak levels. Jordan would find reasons to hate the guy he’s playing against. Brady did the same thing. Most highly motivated people create chips on their shoulders to drive them forward.

Kumbaya bullshite does not work in football.

He's an outspoken evangelical, born-again Christian. What do you expect? This is who he is. I'm good with it but the team needs to play with fire and intensity. The offense has looked soft and even he said they needed more swag. All of that can be true at the same time.

I mean, it is an accurate statement.

If you need to hate someone in order to compete, you don't really have that fight in you. Sure it is a great motivator, but your drive to compete should be more internally driven, not externally.

I don't think Saban ever hated Tennessee, LSU or Auburn. I think he understood some of the fanbase hate, but that was about it. He probably thought many of those people were crazy. He just did his job, developed game plans and recruited talent that allowed him to regularly beat those teams. Freeze's answer seems fine to me.

You'll stop caring once he gets the program rolling and winning.

He definitely could have handled that differently. You can say we want to compete and beat one of our oldest rivals and we know that’s important here at Auburn. Don’t have to say you hate them.
Coach Dye didn’t hate uga or bama, but he knew how important those rivalries are.
Guess what, you beat uga and bama, our people are gonna love the hell out of you.

Kirby Smart response:
There is no diminishing of a rivalry. I tend to agree with coach [Hugh] Freeze. It's not about hate for me. I don't look at it as 'I hate any of their players.' I recruited a lot of them. I don't look at it and say 'I hate any of their coaches' because I like a lot of their coaches. I've known all those guys for a long time. I have a lot of respect for Hugh. I look at it as a hell of a fierce rivalry and that's really why you do this business.
