This bill attempts to put the student back in student athlete by making them ineligible for transfer until they've completed the 1st 3 yrs of academics.

Only if that rule applies to all students at all universities. No transfers for any students, then it's fair and puts the 'student' back in student athlete.

Caleb Williams to USC
He went to USC because of Riley, not any other reason. He followed the coach he signed to play for.

Nick Saban will be retiring soon. This bill is for the future of college football and will not benefit him with the little time coaching he has left.

Thank goodness. How long had he been held captive?

I'm talking about pre-portal tampering with NIL inducements.

Yeah?

And the high school coaches are the legal middle man.

IF the NCAA restricts the transfer policy, what's the point in tampering with another team's star talent behind the scenes when he can't transfer anyway?

Bingo.

Right now, schools are having to re-recruit their own players to get them to stay. And active players are shopping their services to the highest bidder then bolting for the bigger brand teams. i.e. Caleb Williams to USC

This isn't the worst problem in the world.

But restricting transfers to mandatory redshirts changes the nature of a lot of these "problems".

I don’t think where college football is going will arrive anywhere that can sustain it. There needs to be significant guardrails on the implications of NIL or the free market in college football talent will lead to an even larger separation between haves and have-nots. Very likely with even fewer haves too. This will ultimately lead to fan disengagement in the sport as the competitive imbalance causes folks to tap out.

College football is not the NFL where the sport has an element of stars inducing interest in addition to local fandom. College football fans are the fans of their schools not the players. Their support of the players is contingent on their donning the “correct” colors. Nobody is going to follow the 5-star who got bought by Alabama, Texas, Ohio State, etc. When second tier can’t compete for talent enough to get their fair share of wins against the blue bloods, those fans are gonna deemphasize football in their weekend plans.

None of the big money leagues in the United States operate like free markets. Free markets are bad for competition - eventually most markets consolidate around a few competitors - and the entertainment value of sports is in the competition.

I am in favor for the transfer rule being changed. Been saying that for a year that it will make this a lot less like the NFL if they have to stay for a bit.

Another notable provision in the bill would require athletes to complete three years of residency at a given institution before being eligible to transfer without penalty.

That killed it for me. No athlete in this age should have to stay anywhere he doesn't want to be. I say go. But 3 years,,no!!!

People forget how we got here and all this sitting out a year and it's hurts the integrity of the game is overrated. They owe us nothing and neither do college's. So let them be. So let them transfer if they want out. Even to a rival,as far as I'm concerned.

The government getting involved means the college game will suffer a sure death as we know it.
