quote:True but Jessie set records that later African Americans could not break later on or without the help of performance enhancers.
I must point out that Jesse Owens didn't see a lot of other African American athletes during his time either.

Not sure about Ewers but the rest are all-time greats.

Randy Barnes set the world record in shot put. I coached Randy's son Cole. Matson was great but Barnes was better.
I would go with Curtis Dickey. Olympic speed in a 220 pound body. Should have been better than he did. He still made one of the most amazing plays I have ever seen. It was supposed to be a halfback pass against tu but no one was open. He was on the 20 yard line and decided to run it in for a touchdown. It was like a blur. No one moved he ran so fast.

Thorpe was a good athlete
He won both the Pentathlon and the Decathlon in the same Olympics. That has never been done by anyone else in history.
Jesse Owens won the 100m, 200m, 4x100 relay and long jump in '36
Carl Lewis won the 100m, 200m, 4x100 relay and long jump in '84.
So, Thorpe did something that has never been done since by any athlete in the world. Owens did something that another US athlete did.

It must be pointed out that the Pentathlon of the 1912 games is not the "modern Pentathlon" we know today. It was just five T&F events put together that weren't apart of the Decathlon.
As a pure runner/jumper Thorpe can't compare to Jesse by any standard. But when you throw in the decathlon part and the fact that Thorpe played both pro football and MLB you have to give Thorpe the edge on versatility.
But for the purposes of this thread Thorpe is the best athlete to come out of Carlisle anyway.

We know where you are going....
The subject is Greatest Athlete you dumb arse.
He certainly hasn't made an arse of himself running for political office. Bo has not been the laughing stock of the country on national tv. Bo does not have children outside of marriage. Has not threatened to shoot his wife. Bo is a successful businessman. Did not have to resort to boxing to make money. Graduated from the school he loves and still comes back instead of taking the money and running. Started the Bo Bikes Bama for the tornado victims in Tuscaloosa and so much more.
Bo has nothing but class and grace and well as the respect of others. Your guy is a clown.
