Saban is every bit as much as catalyst for Kirby's success, Kirby having coached under Saban for 13 years learning how to run a program like that.

No but Bama used to poach the hell out of Georgia in recruiting. I remember several years ago thinking, god damn, Richt is recruiting well but they’re still losing so many 4-5 stars to Bama.


Kirby is keeping most of them in state now and they’re not AS dominant depth wise. They’re still hella good on depth but UGA and now with LSU under Kelly, we’ve caught up. Kirby was still very important to them winning, though. But the catalyst? Nah.

I'm struggling to see any evidence of this. Saban recruited the best talent in college football by a ton. He then DEVELOPED those five stars?

Bama would have been undefeated if they played in the East and got TN at home. They would have beat the dog shite out of TCU just like UGA did(see Sugar Bowl).

Bama got the top two players in the state of GA this year and signed a ridiculously loaded class. Saban isn't done yet, unfortunately.

From an outsider's perspective, UGA has surpassed Bama in OL/DL development. UGA is churning out monsters on both sides of the line, whereas Bama seems to be slipping in that area (still better than most). I don't know if it's development, missed evals, or what because they are getting the stars to sign, but it's not materializing like it use to. The fact that Bama had to portal a Vandy kid to shore up their oline was shocking.

Kirby is following Sabans system. Recruit and hire the best personnel at every level. Kirby is also a fantastic DC.

It's just Sabans Process.

MY BIL thought it was a bad hire and has been calling him Kirby "Not-So" Smart for years, and I gotta say the first couple of years I kinda thought he might be right.

First, thanks for calling me a youngster, grandpa. I don't get that much at my age.

Second, Parcells was a pretty damn good coach in his own right. Are you saying he only won because of Belichick? Do you not think Belichick learned a thing or two from Parcells about running an organization? Funny, since Belichick himself names Parcells as his #1 mentor. When Parcells was defensive coordinator of the Giants, he took Belichick (a special teams assistant) under his wing and taught him to coach linebackers because of a relationship he had with Belichick's father. When Parcells was named head coach, he allowed Belichick to coach the defense but did not give him the DC title to protect him from media scrutiny. There are not many better stories than this in NFL history of a coach mentoring another young coach. Did the student become better than his teacher? Perhaps or perhaps he got lucky and had the GOAT QB for much of his career. Either way, to insinuate that Belichick made Parcells is as foolish as saying Kirby somehow made Saban, so I guess it is a valid example. Just because a student becomes great, it doesn't mean he made the teacher. Usually, it was the teacher who taught him to be great.

Kirby is 1-4 against Alabama.
