As a nice yin to the yang of the "Mea Culpa" thread... post about something you got right...

For me - Daren Bates... not a super highly recruited guy but I saw this hit and thought he would be special... even got my roommates to like him once he started laying the wood at Auburn - only Auburn guys they knew were Cam Newton and Daren Bates. Ended up having a solid career in the league from a humble 3 star beginning.

Right - Gus could never make halftime adjustments

Wrong - His replacement was even worse in every aspect, especially recruiting, and told Gus “Here hold my beer” but Gus spilled it.

I don't know if I called anything in here but I thought President Roberts would go big or go home

Turns out that was right

I’ll never forget when Daren Bates made the fake 2009 Heisman winner quit in the Iron Bowl.

I thought Keihl and JJ would be good.

I thought Reuben Foster was coming to Auburn.

I thought Leon Hart would be an Outland Trophy winner.

I called that we would win a national championship when we signed Cam(didn’t really know anything about him, watched highlights) and we had that experience at O line. No shite. So much so, I grew a handle bar mustache and told people that I would only shave it until we did win a championship. My employer at that time told me it had been 56 years since Auburn won a Championship, that I would be growing that mustache for a long time.

I shaved it a couple of weeks before the game and we still won. Wish I had put money where my mouth was though.

I knew Harsin was a bad hire from day one.

I was similar. Was with my gf at the time at the Outback Bowl in 09 and they played a video of Cam on the video board. I looked at her and said “He’s good. Like Heisman and National Championship good.”

Also dug up some posts on another forum from March of 2010 with a similar sentiment.

Bought into his first press conference but soured quickly after that. The way he holed up in his office during 2020 bowl practice, didn’t talk to the team or staff, or even show up at the team banquet were the first red flags of many.

Me and a buddy went to the exhibition game when we were in college. While my buddy was checking out the dance team, I was watching us warm up. I tapped my buddy on the shoulder and said, "I know we suck in basketball, but look, we got a fatboy on the team this year."

We watched the fatboy and soon were saying things like. He handles the ball well, for a fatboy. He's really pretty quick and fluid. He jumps easily. Not a bad looking shot. Get him in shape and I believe we might have something.

They announced the starting lineups and that was the first time we heard the name "Charles Barkley." By the end of the game, we couldn't wait to tell all the guys who blew off going to the game that they had better go to the next one to see this guy. I believe the phrase "we got us a basketball Bo" was used.

Benji's in Auburn '93-'94 timeframe. Regular group of a dozen or so friends (guys & girls) hung out there weekly. One night, the group slowly trickles out until it's just me and a girl. We had been friends for a while, but no sparks really.

Shot my shot, just thinking we'd have some fun.

Married nearly 26 years.

I knew Gus should been gone after the 2015 season and we should have hired Freeze instead of Harsin.

I bought in to the JJ for Heisman campaign and thought we were hiring Hugh Freeze last go round.

Right after Bama hired Franchione, I was up late on the old PC and decided to do a deep dive on his career. Put together a post about him on the ITAT SEC board (I think) ridiculing his resume and how awful a fit he was going to be.

I knew I’d hit a nerve when, about a month later, I received an email containing a cut-and-paste of my post from my cousin who said “check this out, it’s been going around the webs for awhile - this guy really nailed it!”

Never called anything Auburn, but I actually called Lane Kiffin to Tennessee several months before the coaching search, and my UT friend can vouch. Of course, I did not call what would end up happening

Another non-Auburn, but a little while back on the Rant I said Bud Foster would be pursued by A&M, based on a convo i had with a Clemson friend who "knew things". We both agreed he probably wouldn't accept the job, but A&M was gonna at least try. I got blasted for it, even by a few Auburn posters. Two weeks later the story broke, and to this day only one person apologized to me, lol...

We took a shuttle from Maryville to Neyland stadium back in 2004. They had the Vol network piped in and were listening to them discuss where they would be rated after they thrashed us -- I think they were in the top five at that time, but not for long.

I told my wife that we were going to stomp their little hillbilly dickies in the dirt and empty their stadium by the third quarter. I got that one right.

I will remind every mother fricker in here if you carried Harsin’s jock until the Penn State game your takes are useless, not even worth the price of gift wrapper material.

WFE!!
