First, I'm not saying Kiffin is leaving for AU, but he knows OM has an culture issue.

Ole Miss developed a culture around "winning the tailgate." For decades, the product on the field couldn't compete, so the battlefield for Ole Miss became the tailgate. The Grove is awesome and I've had great times every time I've been. But the issue is the football game on Saturday is a distraction from the main event, The Grove. This was built over decades and will take a while to correct.

Maybe I'm off base or full of crap, just something I've observed on my 5-6 trips to Oxford. Not a troll, though.

The grove is a picnic, not a tailgate.

Normally, yes, but not when the Rebs are good and playing good teams, as evidenced by Saturday's crowd.

I always found it funny that people place some sort of aura around the Grove.

I mean, I honestly don't have anything against Ole Miss, but the truth of the matter is that they have had four 10-win seasons since 1962 — one each under Kiffin, Freeze, Cutcliffe, and Kinard (who directly followed Vaught).

If this is a cultural problem, it's been going on for 60 years.

I can’t wholly disagree.

Students have always been an issue staying and our older fans don’t like people standing and cheering.

It’s certainly an issue that we need to continue to correct. Yeah, we’ve got the saying may not win every game but never lost the party. Great and all but we’ve conditioned ourselves to expect this because we haven’t had sustained success or shown the desire to maintain high levels of success.

Ah yes, and I bet you think Toomers corner is some cool tradition.

Alabama was this way for decades, and still may be to some degree.

I've always wondered, is this a cultural thing in the South, a function of the program (for whatever reason), or simply age-related?

Do other, especially more established programs around the country deal with this?

I find it funny that people think that fans have an impact on players preparing or executing game days

Like a British tea party. All of the focus is on table manners, and pinky out BS, whilst eating chicken fingers, tea sandwiches, and sweet tea served served in Solo dinnerware and flatware.

Ridiculousness

The Grove is one of the most overrated things in the SEC. Almost as overrated as Jimbo Fisher was.

I mean, when your school's mascot is a racist, slave holding, treasonous loser, and you embrace that to the point of making it the identity of your entire school... Wtf else can you expect besides a shitty culture of ignorant losers??

From where I sit, Auburn has the culture problem. Win at all costs, can't be content with success, back stabbing coaches. Ole Miss's problem is a small fan base that likes to have a good time and enjoy themselves. College football is a game that is meant to give the players and fans joy. Ole Miss gets it. Auburn does not and will always be unhappy looking up at the rear-end of Alabama.

A) it's definitely been less than 2 decades since y'all benched Colonel Reb. More like 1, but I know how hard it is for Mississippi folks to count that high

B) You're still the Ole Miss Rebels. Just bc you're no longer trotting out a cartoon confederate in his grey's doesn't mean we don't know exactly what you are. Nobody actually associates the black bear with Ole Miss, bc y'all still embrace the Confederacy and base your identity on that.

To be fair, auburn has developed a culture about family then has ran five different coups in the past 20 years to get coaches fired

Officially retired in 2003. I know it’s difficult for you to count but how many years is that? 19 years, 11 months? Twenty years is two decades you say? Get the frick out.

Auburns original mascot was just a black guy.

“Long before Auburn adopted a head-bobbing tiger named Aubie or a well-trained eagle, like Nova or Spirit, the school used Frazier, an African American man called “Dabble” by fans, as its mascot.

On this day, Auburn’s first game in the storied football program’s history, Frazier walked side-by-side with the mascot from the opposing University of Georgia. That mascot, according to lore, was originally intended to be a poor, blind, elderly Black man named Lewis Green, nicknamed Old Tub.”
