Question For AU Historians

Why did Auburn play UT at Legion Field ever other year? UT got their home field in Knoxville, but AU had to use Legion Field as their "home field" when UT came down. Tennessee's first visit to JHS was in 1980 (Barfield's last year). I never knew this!
I would love to know the story behind it. It seems like a shite deal for Auburn.

I'm pretty sure GT is still pissed off about us greasing the tracks, forcing them to walk back to Auburn for the game...
We been petty..

For years, Auburn used Legion Field as bait to schedule marquee games. Auburn was a hard place to travel to and our facilities were smaller and less impressive than Legion Field. Tennessee would only agree to play Auburn at Legion Field. Georgia Tech also refused to come to Auburn but would travel to Birmingham.

I’m not sure… but I’m guessing it had something to do with seating capacity… at the time legion field had it… JHS didn’t.

It was about capacity, revenue, and the ability to get there. Before interstates, Auburn was pretty hard to get to. Cliff Hare did not seat as many as Legion Field, and we could make more money playing in Birmingham, plus a lot of recruits came from there.
Even in the 60s, we didn't play many games in Auburn. That started to change when they enclosed the south endzone, raising the capacity to 44k, and during the Sullivan years when they enclosed the north endzone, raising the capacity to 60k.

UT first played in Cliff Hare in 1974, which Auburn won. The Vols had to run onto the field from the southeast tunnel, which was the student section. Students threw a few oranges at them. Shug was the coach and we won 21-0.
Auburn changed the visitors entrance tunnel soon thereafter.
1980 was the year UT and AU agreed to play home and home on a regular basis.

Not really, visitors came out in the student section well into the 80s if not the 90s. I’m pretty sure it lasted into the 90s.

All Big games were played in Birmingham.

2001: Reconfiguring the Locker Rooms and Restoring the End Zones
The capacity of Jordan-Hare Stadium actually increased by a relatively small amount, to 86,063, prior to the 2001 season, as Coach Tommy Tuberville ordered the locker rooms to be reconfigured. This operation moved the visitors’ locker room from underneath the South Stands to a new location in the northeast corner, giving the visitors a new tunnel from which to emerge onto the field. The home locker room was dramatically upgraded and expanded, and a new tunnel was added, allowing Auburn’s team to come onto the field from the center of the South Stands. A giant “AU” logo in the center of the home locker room floor was declared off-limits to foot traffic by that year’s seniors, and has been roped off ever since.

Roads were not always what they are now. I 65 only went about as far south as Wetumpka back in the day.

There was a story that came out of that GT thing, when we played them one season, I remember being in a parade in the band with the old chant from the day after that greased track instance, which Auburn started then way back then that went, "Wreck tech, wreck tech, wreck the hell outta Georgia Tech"
That had those God awful white and gold uniforms

Speaking on this rearrangement, this is now why the band's pregame sets up at that center exit, as well as enters onto the field the way it does, back in the 2001 the band was still figuring out how they would adjust the pregame entrance. If you see the band after the first stoppage in the fourth quarter after the now lightshow swag-surf part you'll see them jumping up and down in place to a drum cadence, this was similar to the beat used to start pregame back before we have the pregame we have now.
My question would be, what would it take for Auburn to enclose the North Upper deck end zone, where would we put the North Score Board? What's the resistance to do so other than attendance?

Was a big FU to Alabama for George Wallace poking his finger at Washington a little too long and hard. Not that the section south of town through Hoover was much earlier.

Plans were released for JHS expansion just prior to Jay Jacobs “retiring”…..I think the people around Auburn didn’t trust Greene so much with that project. At least that is what I have been told as to why it was put on hold.

JHS expansion
Capacity is not the key.
Amenities matter. Every seat should be a chair with a cup holder.
Whether we have 75K or 100k does not matter.
Better seats and amenities like food and beverage should be the priority over more seats.
Aluminum bench seating needs to go.

Haven't you heard - there is an underwater creek in that area which prevents expansion! Actually, that is probably an urban legend I heard but was always the excuse back in the day.
I don't think there is a point in anymore expansion though. I don't have to tell you attendance is down almost everywhere.

I mean sure, but in order to have that and not lose some season ticket holders they'd have to expand at least a little.

Wasn't the TN game at Legion Field part of a doubleheader with a Bama Game?
Posted on 11/19/22 at 7:19 pm to blairjs
They used to have double headers - Alabama and Auburn in two games against other power teams at Legion Field
