Who could Auburn hire that would be a good hire?

Not necessarily a splash hire. Kiffin, Freeze, or Deion would be a “splash hire,” but I don’t necessarily see any of those hires as being “good” hires specifically for what Auburn needs right now.
None of those guys have the consistency or steady hand to build the solid foundation that Auburn has lacked, quite frankly, since the mid-Tuberville years. Yes, they’ve had good years since then, but it’s been a house of cards that sometimes stands up and looks good, but more often than not, crumbles.
So, who is the steady hand and solid coach that can come in and rebuild Auburn, that will also go to Auburn? I really do not know. Some may say Rhule, and to that I say, maybe? He had a few good years at Baylor but I really don’t know how good of a coach and program builder he is.

I thought Harsin was a "good" hire not a splash hire. Now I want a splash hire.

I think Kiffin would be a good hire and splashy. Freeze would be splashy but not necessarily for the right reasons. We all know he'd come if asked so there isn't any drama there. He'd probably be good too, but not elite and not without risk.
I think Grimes is probably a hire that a lot of people in the industry would deem a safe hire with upside. It wouldn't be splashy here or with the fan base, but I do think a lot of people in CFB would deem it a good hire.
Of course, a lot of people in CFB said Harsin was a good hire, so that's not really a reliable metric.

Assuming the game hasn't left him behind and assuming he still has the fire, Gary Patterson might be a good choice.
Auburn fans won't want to hear this, but they should brace to be a step behind Bama and Georgia in terms of overall talent for the foreseeable future. Patterson showed at TCU that he can punch up.
Things did fizzle at TCU admittedly, but I genuinely think he would at least be worth a look. If only to right the ship to prepare for the next guy.

Both would probably give serious consideration and would be good coaches and you wouldn't have any "shite" floating around with them. More of a Pat Dye type hire. Solid fundamentals, good guys, good strategists.
They won't do this though. It'll be some funnin and gunnin offensive "guru" and will get them to one championship and 6 wins seasons other than that.

The difference between Grimes and Harsin is that Grimes is getting it done at a Power 5 school that is relevant on the national stage. Harsin was a G5 coach who led his school to its worst stretch in over a decade. Grimes would be a better hire than Harsin was, and it wouldn't be close.

I think most Auburn fans don't mind this reality. There is a big gulf between 7-5 and 12-0 that we can play in for a while and not get tired of it. Many of us just want to get back to performing at our historical level of around 15th or so, which probably means a lot of 9-4, 11-2 type of stuff. I'm good with that. I don't want to chase the top 3-4 programs in the country if it means we have to take huge swings and most of them will be misses.

If your admin is mature enough to actually execute this, you'll avoid the wilderness trek Tennessee went on and now Florida seems to be embarking on.

NOPE... I'll take a splash hire that gives us 2010s and 2017s with the ups and downs and puts fear into our rivals every time we play vs. consistent mediocrity.
Malzahn beat Saban more than any other SEC coach during his tenure. Bama fans knew anytime they played us that regardless of record, that game could go either way.
EDIT: The last thing on the planet we need is our rivals telling us what we need... "don't make a splash hire guys that would be so stupid"
UF hired "safe bets" in Mullen and Boom... How'd that play out?

Maybe, but I think Tennessee and UF show that it's dicey even when you don't try and go for broke.
